Hot tea with honey and lemon. It works great for my 8 year old.
But I would also check into getting a second opinion on his asthma. It sounds like his inhaler is not enough. They put my son on singular and he is doing much better. Good luck

My daughter had a cough that would not go away from age 3 to 4.5...after taking her to 3 doctors...they all diagnosed her with asthma and gave her an inhaler. The inhaler didn't work so I took her to an ear nose and throat specialist who worked out that the cough was caused by nasal drainage and it was so irritating to the back of her throat that she coughed and hacked. It was very distressing ...she was not able to tell us where this cough came from...and neither could the first three doctors. It cleared up with nasal medication. GL

Well, maybe you need a second opinion. A persistent cough like that means there's something wrong!
In the meantime, try a humidifier. And you might want to investigate what the child's eating -- my son, at a young age, suffered from gastric reflux, which means that fatty/acidic food like pizza irritates his throat and makes him cough!
A good naturopath could probably get to the bottom of this.

hello, take the time to check for a fever, be careful with over the counter cough medic-ans, like halls, there really strong for a child that age. if the child is on an inhaler for Asama, doctors normally know what there doing, a child's cough syrup will work..Alan

Take 2 table spoons of honey and 1/4 lemon. Squeeze the juice and mix the honey and lemon. I guarantee you the cough will stop. Give it to him every 30-60 minutes for a few hours than as needed.

A general practitioner will often miss something as simple as seasonal allergies. See an allergist if you can.
Don't substitute home remedies for real medicine. Delaying your childs help can lead to pnemonia.

If its a virus it just has to go away by itself. Thats happened to my son a couple of times and I was told it will just go away and it did. The coughing is part of getting over the virus its normal.

you can try to steam him. Turn shower on hot all the way (without him in it of course) close bathroom door and try to get him to breath in and out to open up his lungs. try for as long as the water is hot. do this every few hours and see if it helps
