If they are actually gasping for air, you have a problem and need to call a vet...sometimes they open their mouth like that to meow and nothing comes out.."the quiet meow"...make sure they have a warm place to stay and that the mother stays near...she'll let you know if something is wrong. Just keep an eye on them

Leave the door to your closet open and see if that helps. Make sure there is fresh water available for the Mom cat along with her food. If they haven't improved in 8 to 10 hours from now, I would call a vet. They may have under-developed lungs or a lung parasite--especially if your Mom cat is allowed outdoors. She may have something that she passed on to the kittens.

Panting in animals is a sign of 4 things: Pain, Illness, Stress, Heat. If you are positive that they are not over heated where they are then I would call the vet ASAP! Pain or stress in kittens that young can be life threatening.
Please get your cat spayed as soon as the kittens are done nursing! The world definitely does NOT need any more unwanted cats!

They may be overheated. If it's too warm they will pant just like adult cats to cool themselves. Try leaving the door wide open so some air circulates. Mom won't let them get so cold they'd freeze.

Are they too warm? Kittens can overheat. Anytime you see any respiratory changes in any animal, especially one that is only 5 days old, you need to seek veterinary help. You should call an emergency vet tonight! Don't wait!!

You should probably take them to a vet ASAP. I don't know much about newborn kittens, but my cat rarely panted, even after lots of physical exercise.

Kittens naturally breathe faster than cats do. It may be normal. Are the nostrils clogged? Do they seem congested? Is there discharge from their noses or eyes? Are their mouths open to breathe? Are they vocalizing? (vocalizing is a sign of health)
If not, they are fine. They keep each other warm and mama would move them if the temperature wasn't perfect for them.
Really, try to relax, they're fine.

I would take them to a vet just to be on the safe side. you would take your child to the doctor wouldn't you? Just because they are animals does not mean you should just leave it up to chance. (that is how I feel anyway) you are responsible for their well being just and you are responsible for the momma cats well being.

Maybe they are hot.
Take some clothes off them to see what happens.
Or take them to the vet its probably something serious.
Better to be safe than sorry.
