Most people gain weight b/c nicotine in cigs suppress the appetite a little and also increase their metabolism a little bit. You can overcome this by keeping active to maintain a high metabolism, maybe chew gum, or carrott sticks to fight the oral habit that goes with smoking and just make sure you eat healthy and not a lot of junk. Good luck to you!

The medication the person above was thinking of is called Chantix. It is suppose to ease the withdrawal symptoms but also stop the nicotine effects if a person where to smoke while on it. I've heard of some great results from it.

I am a former smoker and can say there are two reasons why people gain weight. One is what was already mentioned and that is that people want to satisfy that oral urge and so they eat and they eat often and a lot. Secondly, nicotine boosts your metabolism (and they say it is bad for you?.... just joking). When you quit smoking, you lose that boost to your metabolism you had from the nicotine. Less metabolism + Eating more = Weight gain.

I love the new commercial comparing size to health and which would you prefer. I gained 20 pounds after I quit smoking but I was only 100 pounds when I smoked, now I look healthier and feel healthier as well. :)

Natural Quit Smoking Magic

It is probably because smokers are used to having something in their hands and/or mouths almost all the time. When they need a replacement for the cigarette, they use food or candy.

Also, quitting is terribly stressful. One way that many people handle stress is to eat.

To avoid the weight gain, you might try to use a step program (like Nicoderm patch) or nicorette gum, and come off slowly - cold turkey is not only really hard, but is more likely than any other method to result in failure. Also, get help through a support group (call 1-800-NO BUTTS).
Doctors will sometimes prescribe a drug called Welbutrin; it's an antidepressant, but it has been proven to help people quit smoking AND it alleviates the stress and anxiety of quitting.

If you absolutely need to have something in your mouth, go for sugar free gum. Also find things to fidget with (a fidget stone, for example) to keep your hands busy.

Good luck!

Most people replace the oral satisfaction they get from smoking with food. Some suggestions are:

1. Chew lots of gum and suck on hard candies
2. Keep lots of celery and carrot sticks around to eat.
3. When the craving hits, exercise.
