Well, people have already answered what it is prescribed for, mostly for anxiety.
All benzos are addictive. Some are more so than others. Xanax is actually very helpful for treatment of anxiety, nervous disorders, and for people with depression during the time when first starting an anti-depressant. It takes a while, usually two weeks for an anti-depressant to kick in. Xanax has some anti-depressant properties as well as anti-anxiety.
Xanax is also very useful as a PRN, for taking as needed for a panic attack, or anxiety.
If you're friend is taking them often, then they need to go see a doctor to help them wean off them. The effects of suddenly stopping can be severe.

Also, it sounds as if your friend needs to see a doctor for whatever problems they have underlying the use of Xanax, I presume without a prescription.
Your friend may be treating themselves for anxiety or depression, or some other problem.

Looks dodgy stuff. Presumably she's taking this under prescription from her doctor? Follow the link to read more.

• Xanax is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent on the medication. Do not take more than the prescribed amount of medication or take it for longer than is directed by your doctor. Withdrawal effects may occur if Xanax is stopped suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Seizures may be a side effect of sudden discontinuation of the medication. Your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction in dose.

What is Xanax?
• Xanax is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Xanax affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety.
• Xanax is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. Xanax is also used to treat panic disorders.
• Xanax may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Its prescribed for Anxiety and Panic attacks. It can make a person drowsy but its not prescribed for sleep. there are other pills out there now for sleep. Xanax can become addicting IF abused like taking it all the time instead of taking it "as needed for anxiety." The withdrawls are bad if someone is infact addicted to them and decides to quit. The best way to lessen the withdrawl side effects is to slowly wean off of them instead of quitting cold turkey.

Xanax is usually prescribed for short term use for anxiety/panic attracts. The person taking the medication usually starts the med as directed and then begins to depend on it for all of life stresses--which makes it highly addictive and difficult to stop. The need or craving for "stress relief" overshadows the need to stop. Your friend is probably addicted both chemically and psychologically. Good luck to you.

About a week or so, but after one week it won't be that bad, and may not be noticeable. There is no black and white figure - it depends on how much you take, how long you take it, and your personal body chemistry. But generally speaking, if you take it for just a week or two you can experience some withdrawals that should be mild. If you take it month or two you have much worse withdrawals. If you take it more than that, the withdrawals are like someone opening a door to hell and shoving you through, and can be quite severe.

some very good answers have been given in the side affects with the doseage info. Xanex is a very strong prescription given for anxiety/anxiety attacks. They make you feel very drowsy, make you feel or kind of not feel therefore you want to increase and when it is time to stop it is very hard to decrease and stop them. I took them for just about 6 months when my mom died suddenlly of cancer. I was devastated and anti-depressants, etc. wasn't enough. Never would I try Xanex or Ativan again. It was awful decreasing the doseage to go off completely and I worked for a M. D. It is a very strong med and really messes you up. Try any counsling, therapy, as much as you need before strong anxiety med. Your friend needshelp getting off the med. She is hooked on it to make it thru the day. Help her.

It is an Anti-anxiety medication, very similar to Valium, and it is HIGHLY addictive, if you THINK your friend has a problem with them, You are most likely right. Most people with an addiction don't recognize the addiction themselves. So Bravo to you for noticing....Good Luck if there is an addiction problem it will be a difficult battle Good Luck!

Panic disorder, nerves, sleeping disorders, rls, alot of things. It is very addictive, and should not be taken for a long period of time. There are other meds out there for panic attacks, paxil is a good one. Sounds to me like your friend is in for a world of hurt when she detoxs from it, its no fun!

I am prescribed zanax and any doctor will tell you that most people get hooked on it and I take them for panic attacks but most people are prescribed for it for depression because they are anti-depressants and any kind will make you to sleepy and on a high.I can't take them everyday because I will be unable to drive and work. You should get your friend off of them because without the right dosage it can affect her physical state.
