I have seen applications ask if you have been "convicted of a felony in the last 10 years", but some broaden that to a "charge", or include "misdeamors" as well as "felonies". What they are concerned about and what they look for will depend upon what type of job you are applying for. Some employers conduct a much more thorough background check that do others. If other things are discovered during a background investigation that might make one less than a desirable candidate for that job, then it is at their discretion.
If you are not sure, see if your local PD will run a background check for you. Alot of places will just check your locality and/or the last place you lived for info. You might also do one of those online background checks to see what comes up. Sometimes this information is incorrect as well.
If you lie and it is found out, then you are automatically disqualified from that position and possibly others within the company or its addiliates.

Most employers only care about felonies for the past 7 years, however there are different circumstance depending on what job you're applying for. For example, a retail job is going to ask you about any crime you have committed beacuse they are particularly interested in theft convictions which can either be petty (misdemeanor) or grand (felony). Most employers won't really care about misdemeanor convictions unless they involve theft or violence.

Ok, in a perfect world, normally it should not.
But if you are the boss and you have 40 applications and 10 are real good, but 4 of that 10 have a misdemeanor and 6 do't but all are good, who would you call back ??
So yes it can cause you not to be hired. And if they run a crminal background on you, it does show up, and if you don't tell them, if asked you would be fired when they find out.

Felonies are really the only concern, unless there is a really thorough background investigation, which most employers do not do. You do not even have to report them, I've only ever seen applications asking for felony involvment.

Actually it depends on what type of background investigation is being conducted. If it asks for all convictions then put all convictions. If it asks and you don't tell then you know you would be fired after the employer finds out and sometimes you could be in trouble with the law for lying on an application. When in doubt, ask your employer.

Usually they ask about felonies! Many ask if you have ever been convicted of a crime! I think a lot of that is due to the fact that many who are violent, especially spousal abusers, are never convicted of a felony!
