I won't go into detail because I'm ashamed to admit it, but there is this constant temptation that I fight every day of my life. It is keeping me from being happy. I try to fight it, but it'll just pop into my head and I'm back to square one.
I have tried praying over it, and I know that God has helped me out tremendously, but he hasn't let me have victory over it. Sometimes it makes me want to just kill myself to escape from it. Sometimes I feel that's the only escape. Then when I get to that point, God always brings me back.
How can I pray more effectively for him to help me? I just don't know what to do anymore.

You need to find an accountability partner. One that will pray with you and help you. To keep the thoughts from coming to you. Satan will remind you of what you have done wrong. God has forgiven, and forgotten. Satan wants us tempted so that we will leave Jesus, and then he can win, and make you doubt. Read your Bible, pray, and we will pray with you. Also tell Satan that he can't win and will never win. Pray for God protection on your mind, and tell Satan to get thee behind me. Also remind him where he will spend eternity.

We all go through temptations of one kind or another and sometimes its very difficult to deal with a particular one as an individual. Keep praying and trust God that He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear.
I experienced this for many years . Giving in always left me so upset with myself. Sometimes it takes time to beat something like this. Don't be too hard on yourself but trust that God who has begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it. Stay close to Jesus and the Word.
I think if you are having trouble breaking through and overcoming in a certain area it is good to fast. Fasting seems to have been forgotten in may christian circles today but it is certainly a biblical principle and something between you and God than can help you breakthrough.

I have a terrible time keeping away from sweets. I know this probably sounds silly, but I am tempted every day and often fail to keep my hands off of cookies, candy, etc. As a result, I'm 20 pounds overweight. I'm also older, and eating that much sugar is very bad for me.
I also have prayed for the Lord to help me resist. Just keep praying and keep trying to do what is right. He will not let you down.

First u have to trust God ok?
Relaxed ur self and pray in calm.
what u also can do is get busy with work, exercise, and with ur friends...dont stay alone
Spend time with ur family or with people who make us feel at peace
Fast sometimes, coz not eating in the whole day purifies ur body and ur mind too, ur body will learn some discipline and ur thoughts will remain focused.
Set goals ur self for every day and focus in this goals (goals not related to the temptation of course)
Muslims we pray 5 times a day..and for sure it keeps u away from sin...
U´ll be fine dont worry.

~If you need the crutch of prayer, spend more time at it. It you want to deal with the problem, work on your will power - you know - that strength crap that comes from within - instead of wasting all your time with superstitious rituals. Or, you can do what I do. I give in to the temptation, have a ball, then enjoy wallowing in self-pity and remorse afterwards. Have a nice day and Goobleskeera bless you.

Every time a lesson is presented, you have the opportunity to learn through wisdom. Each time you ignore that opportunity, the lesson will be presented again with added pain. How much pain you wish to endure will determine how long it takes to learn the lesson.

I cor. 10: 13. No tempation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the tempation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.

Ask Him to reveal the sin that is keeping you from coviction and overcoming it, I had the same problem with booze for years, there's usually another sin that is causing this temptation, not one that is apparent.
