A recent makeover show featured an old laminate counter top that was painted with paint made just for that purpose. check it out with your local paint supply outlet. It was really beautiful and did not look "painted"! I'd give it a try before attempting to put a new top over it. As for tiling, our condo countertops came with it and am blessed that my cleaning lady gets it so clean-most people are getting rid of the ones, like ours, that are ceramic -or are they all made of that~they don't like messing with keeping the grouting clean and it also seems to "date" the kitchen/house marlyne B

I redo a lot of laminate countertops. I've found that the 41/4 x 41/4 white ceramic tile works well but be sure to really scratch up the old laminate with a razor knife so the ceramic adhesive will bond well to it. Use 2x6 bullnose trim pieces to finish off the edge. Bond them with liquid nails type adhesive and they'll stay put. It's about the same cost as new laminate and quick.

Sand the existing laminate with a belt sander to scuff up the smooth surface then apply glue to both the old and new laminate, apply the new , then route or file the excess off.
