A cover letter is something you write that accompanies your resume that you send to a potential employer. In it, you can express the reason for your interest in the position, relate your past work experience to the potential new position, etc. It's just a way to make yourself stand out -- so they are pretty important when looking for a new job.

A cover letter is the first page of a fax transmission usually indicating the number of pages included and a brief description of what is included.
