Does creamy frosting or butter frosting have a better consistency for decorating? One web site I went to said that creamy frosting is better because the butter makes butter frosting melt when held in hands for a long time in the decorating bag. Other web sites suggested butter frosting for sugar cookies.

No frosting is best; frosting makes the cookies sickeningly sweet. Three other options:
1. Sprinkle with colored sugar or candy decorations before baking.
2. Use some food coloring to color the dough.
3. Paint cookies with egg yolk paint before baking. To make paint blend 2 egg yolks add 1/2 teaspoon water well. Divide into several small cups. Add food coloring for desired colors. Use a small clean paint brush and add a drop or two of water if the paint thickens too much before you finish. Egg yolk paint keeps its vivid color so it can even be used on dark doughs. I have successfully painted gingerbread cutouts with it.

If you plan on stacking the cookies or decorating them a few days before eating, butter-cream frosting would be a bad way to go, as it will melt and not set. Use the kind made from powder sugar with a little bit of water and vanilla instead.

Butter is a much better flavor choice-as to it melting faster, chill in frige or even freeze. Never heard of many receipe for frosting sugar cookies-the sugar is the frosting as some sprinkle it on top before baking. marlyne B

i suggest sugar, because sugar hardens better than butter. Butter may be smoothier for decoration, but you want it to last...right?

Go with a traditional confectionor's sugar blend. It is stiff, and will hold up well when you decorate.

use royal icing instead. easy to work with and sets so there are no running or sticking issues.

equal parts powdered sugar and egg white with a little lemon juice. you can adjust consistence with more egg white, and use pasteurized.
