"good" and "cheap" will ALWAYS be two different things! if you dont "invest" in good food you will be investing in vet care .

In answering late - it really depends on what you feed, how much you feed, and where you buy. I have 2, 80 pound dogs - the younger gets around 2lbs a day whereas the older dog gets about 1 1/2 lbs of food a day - soon to be taken down to 1 1/4 lbs for winter. the health benefits far outweigh the cost for me. other benefits are my dogs don't stink, skin/fur or breath. teeth are always clean, coat soft and shiny, no big sticky/mushy poop to deal with. I probably spend about $100 a month on food for my dogs. They actually don't eat $100 worth of food a month. I fill my freezer on a monthly basis so they will never run out of food. Although I get most of my meat between $ .50 and .99 per pound I do buy a variety of not-so-common things to feed them that may cost a little more than a $1 a pound.

Holistic foods are the best for your pet. Cheap pet foods are loaded with bi-products and other junk. Although it is not cheap it will prevent types of skin cancers. If you want cheap stick to dry foods. You can buy holistic dry foods. Once you start on can food it will be hard to go back. I have two bull mastiffs and a St. Bernard, trust me it is tiresome.

I get my Holistic can food from Pets Mart for a dollar each. Which cost me $6 a day not including dry.

There are some cheaper dog foods on the market that are just fine for certain breeds, or dogs with out any health related problems. But you do have to be careful with the cheap brands, many dogs are allergic to them. My own pets eat Purina One Chicken and Oatmeal Formula. It is between $15 - $20 for a 20 lb bag, usually closer to $20. Many of them have food allergies to beef byproducts, many animal fats, and corn, which is pretty much all that is in Ol Roy and most cheaper brands of dog foods. I even have one dog that I have to cook chicken and rice for.
You will just have to see how your dog does on the cheaper foods. Many of the smaller breeds in my shelter do just fine on Ol Roy, but the larger breeds typically do not.
What kind of dog do you have?

There are no "cheaP" good dog foods. It takes twice as much cheap stuff for a dog to receive proper nutrition then it does a good quality food. Cheap foods are loaded with cheap fillers, corn, wheat, soy, beet pulp & by products. Corn, wheat, soy & beet pulp are worthless nutrition, they are also pretty much indigestable for dogs. Recent studies are also showing a link between corn, wheat & soy and unexplained seizures in dogs. They are also high allergens. When looking for a food for dogs you need to look for a food that contains meat as at least the first 2 ingredients.
Remeber dogs are meat eaters and are designed to extract proper nutrition and proteins from meat sources not grain.

Foods such as Ole'Roy are totally worthless as food for dogs. You may as well give them gravy flavored sawdust/cardboard.

None that are good are cheap. If they are cheap they are full of fillers and by products.
I my opinion there are really none that are much better than the others.
Prunia Dog Chow is cheap and many dogs do fine on it. It has passed feeding tests and it will provide adaquat nutrition for your dog.

No good dog food is cheap. But what you spend on food you're going to save in vet bills as the dog ages.
I spend right about $40.00 on a 40# bag for my 2 german shepherds.Friends tell me I'm NUTS.It's nothing more than a huge waste of money.
The one giving me the most grief about this has 3 rottweilers. He feeds cheap crap from Wal-mart.Each dog gets about 3 cups of food twice a day.
His dogs tear up everything they come in contact with and EAT IT.His vet bills are outrageous and his dogs cannot be fed together as they are extremely food aggressive.
A 40# bag of food lasts us almost 7 weeks. He goes thru 40# in 3 weeks. He claims it's due to the fact that he has one more mouth to feed than I do.I tell him he's an idiot.
Granted it is a pain to go well out of my way to go to the petstore to buy food. But I'll put up with a little annoyance to save alot of money in the long run.
Nearest petstore to me is over 20 miles away.I buy in bulk when I can to save myself the trip. That extra bag will stay just as fresh sitting in my closet as it will on the shelf at the store as long as it stays unopened.

,Walmart has an off brand similar to iams lamb and rice formula and it's much much cheaper. Feed store's are cheaper than grocery store's and you get more for your money. Make sure to always check the bags list of ingredients you don't want the first 3 listed to show CORN as a main ingred! It has little nutritional value yet you'll have a hard time finding a cheaper brand that doesn't list corn/cornmeal/soy/etc.. I buy whole chickens when on sale boil them debone then cook reg.rice in the broth mix and store in a sealed container in fridge and add to dry food ( lamb/chicken and rice )You should want the best possible for a loved animal.

Cheap dog foods really aren't cheap.
If you go to your vet and get something like Science Diet, it will be cheaper in the long run.
The cheapie brands do not provide adequate nutrition, your dog will eat a ton more, and you will spend a lot more time picking up brown piles in your yard.
