This is a condition called pica. commonly found in puppies or dogs on diets. they are looking to get nutrition out of undigested particles. they don't gag on their own feces because they have fewer tastebuds than we do. it can be cured by either adding taste deterrent to their food or by lacing their feces with tabasco sauce.

From what I have learned it is mostly a way for dogs, to prevent predators to know they are around. It is more defensive instinct more than anything.

Apparently it tastes as good to them as chocolate does to us. As far as my experience goes they mostly learn from other dogs to eat it, then love it!
