heavenly Father is perfect." Is that a reference to believing in Christ to cleanse us of all unrighteousness? Is that what He means by perfect, more like perfected? Thanks!

I think it's just meaning to use Jesus as a model, an example, and follow it. God knows we can't be perfect.

We as Christians should strive for perfection and that should be our daily goal. We are totally perfected when he comes back but we must still look forward in attaining Jesus characteristics.

Here's a reference on cleansing and unrighteousness.

I John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"

To be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect needs God’s abundant grace. It takes God’s divine power for us to live a life of godliness.

I looked up the word in the greek dictornary and here is the meaning of perfect:
1) brought to its end, finished

2) wanting nothing necessary to completeness

3) perfect

4) that which is perfect

a) consummate human integrity and virtue

b) of men

1) full grown, adult, of full age, mature
From what I see it doesnt mean to be perfect like we think. Without putting more study into this, this is all I can help you with, Sorry.

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor[g] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,[h] 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren[i] only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors[j] do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Be Perfect . Christ sets up the high ideal of perfect love not that we can fully attain it in this life. That, however, is God's high standard for us

How can we be perfect? 1 in Character in this life we cannot be flawless, but we can aspire to be as much like Christ as possible, demonstrating moral perfection and sinless behavior. In holiness. Like the Pharisees, we are to separate ourselves from the world's sinful values. But UN like the Pharisees, we are To be devoted to God's desires rather than our own, and carry his love and mercy into the world. 3 In maturity. We can't achieve Christlike character and holy living all at once, but must grow toward wholeness. Just as we expect different behavior from a baby, a child, a teenage, and an adult, so God expects different behavior from us depending on our stage of spiritual development. 4 In Love. We can seek to love others as completely as God loves us. We can be perfect if our behavior is appropriate cor our maturity level --perfect, yet with much room to grow. Our tendency to sin must never deter us from striving to be more like Christ. Christ calls all of his disciples to excel, to rise above mediocrity and to mature in every area, becoming like him. Those who strive to become perfect will one day be perfect even as he is perfect. 1 John 3:2,3. God bless you.

In the previous verses Christ is talking about loving one another. We are to be perfect in loving one another as God is perfect in loving us.
