I don't know where you live, but for the most part you won't deal too much with rapist and murderers-the defectives will. You may be first on the scene and take the initial report, but in major crimes you will simply secure the crime scene and call the *****. The job of a patrol officer is actually quite boring and mundane unless you live in LA, Houston or a large metro city. I did the transfer and was very disappointed and transferred BACK to corrections. There is alot of pressure to perform when you are a new patrol officer-ask some of the patrolmen before you make any decisions.

Hey, you keep these guys at bay -- outnumbered every day. Those guys got shanks and 24 hours a day to think about how to mess you up. You live with that so working the street where you at least have a gun to defend yourself won't be that big of a deal.
Worry about the physical fitness tests, the running and the push ups -- but don't sweat the small stuff. Start a physical fitness program and start making contacts and putting in apps.
Good luck.

If you have been a CO for a while (more then 3 yrs) you can do it. Prisons are no fun and if you put up with people who spend 24-7 trying to thinks of ways to mess with you, you can deal with people on the streets. Good luck and stay safe.

you should be seeing more victims in prison ( at least were I worked) killings and attacks on inmate and staff was commom place.
Next you will not go from corrections to supervision of a police, you will go on to the street.
But on the street it is just like in prison, you sort of get numb after a while. I knew I had to get out of corrections, when I saw someone die in front of me and only thought about it making me late to leave work.
And it is the same on the street, now some things with women or children will get all of us, so you throw up a few times and go on with your job.

well if you are a correctional officer you would no that you are not a prison guard and there is no such thing as a prison guard, and if you can work inside a jail or prison then no doubt you can handle what a cop does .

As has been stated, it is for the protection of both the female inmates and the male officers. It provides a witness against a claim of sexual harassment or sexual assault. Although this is not to say that sexual harassment or sexual assault can not occur in a female officer and female inmate situation, but these occurrences are less likely.

You certainly sound like a pipe-dreamer to me. If your a correctional officer as you say you wouldn't be asking a question such as this here and would know how the process works. Try dreaming about something else.

I couldn't work in a confined area with a bunch o f criminals.
Make yourself a list of likes/dislikes about your current job. Rate them in order of importance. See how it matches up with what you think working the street would be like. You should have your answer.

Become a small town cop to see if you like it. If so then move to the big city.
