we are praying to God. Prayer is a form of serving God (Luke 2:36-38). We pray because God commands us to pray (Philippians 4:6-7).Prayer is exemplified for us by Christ and the early church (Mark 1:35; Acts 1:14; 2:42; 3:1; 4:23-31; 6:4; 13:1-3). If Jesus thought it was worthwhile to pray, we should also. God intends for prayer to be the means of obtaining His solutions in a number of situations. We have God's promise that our prayers are not in vain, even if we don't receive specifically what we asked for (Matthew 6:6; Romans 8:26-27).He has promised that when we ask for things that are in accordance with His will, He will give us what we ask for (1 John 5:14-15).

Whether a person be Christian or not is immaterial, people have always prayed and chanted praises to one god or another. Prayer is intended to be a personal dialogue with the divine, with the source of Life, usually making some request for improved conditions in Life, relief of suffering, deeper understanding and so forth. It does not yield peace of mind, only meditation and chi-related activities can yield that. The Shaman also uses the POWER of voice to stir the spirits, as does the inspired Singer of songs. I think it may be necessary sometimes to talk to oneself, just to work things out in your mind, but it's a problem when you rant to yourself in anger, because you create a schizmatic persona which does not wish to be revealed to the world, thus it is heavily masked over. Am I just talking to myself?

Nope. When I pray I am speaking to My Holy Father-my Savior and closest Friend. One who supplies all my needs though his Amazing Grace .

Philippians 4:19
And God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:7-8
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Jesus Christ provides Comfort and Joy.
Who else can I go to but the Lord to answer my needs?

I have to wonder why you put the word "Christian" in your question. When members of any other religion pray to their God or Gods doesn't it have the same effect as when a Christian prays ? If the members of one religion are just talking to themselves when they pray, then the members of any or all other religions are also talking to themselves when they pray.
Maybe finding fault just for the sake of finding fault might be a sign of madness.

The idea is that you are focusing just on God and clearing your mind of all other stray thoughts. It's in the state that you are able to see the days events clearly and be thankful for the good things and ask for strength to deal with the bad things.

Cowardman....great question cowardman (seriously)....but why did you address it to only "christians"? Was it because you know they wont bite back like Muslims?

Funny thing is, when I think of the absurdity of prayer, Islamic rear end smelling is the first and funniest picture that comes to mind.

Cowardman...I tell your worthless cowardly leftist butt this...i would take the wackiest "christian", even with their false religion, over a pc coward like you.

Signed Agnostic Steve

PS -- Jim Jones yourself cowardman...

I urge you to at least try, for the sake of curiosity, to sincerely pray tonight and ask Jesus Christ to make you believe in Him.
Then let me know.

When I pray I am talking to my Father in heaven. He listens to my needs, my fears, my prayer request for others, and my thankfulness. I don't count that as madness. I am thankful that He listens to me, and also Jesus is praying for me also.
