While playing water polo, you should swim with your head out of the water whenever possible. It gives you much better visibility than head down free-style. It also will solve your breathing problem.
If you really want to get better at breathing, practice the timing between your arms and the rolling of your head. Roll your head to one side and breathe about every 3 strokes. As you increase your endurance, you can increase the number of strokes in between breaths.
Of course, the best way to improve is to have a teacher.
Hope this helps!

While doing the freestyle, you have to turn your head left and out of water when your right arm goes up and front, and vice versa.
Thats whan you are supposed to breathe- eg. on the left , breathe in...and on the right, breathe out.

You will see, when you are practising waterpolo for a few weeks, your breathing will go much better. You can improve your 'lung containing' (?) by swimming under water. If you swim under water before or after every training, you also will see that your breathing problems will be solved.

good luck!
