This question was debated for centuries in ancient Greece. You can make a cogent argument for both sides. But what I really like are the follow-on questions: 1) If a man is in the woods talking about something and there is no woman to hear him, is he still wrong? and 2) If a woman is in the woods talking about something and there is no man to hear her, is she still complaining? If you find out the answers to these very profound questions, let me know.

Yes, it does make a sound. If it creates a "vibration" through the air with frequencies within hearing range (64-23,000 Hz), then it would be an audible sound. There are always inaudible sound waves created from all motion, in addition to those audible sound waves. So technically, the falling tree did make a sound. No one could hear it because of the distances in between, but sensitive devices surely pick it up. Anyway, it makes a sound, even when nobody is there to hear it fall.

Ok well get this
EVerything that moves makes a sound
you might not hear it, but if it moves through air it makes a sound
Cause there are particles in air, and they move when you move
through air.

So everything makes a sound when moved.
EVERYTHING. even the smallest amounts of ions or electricity.

the only time there is no sound is in space.
usually if you think there's no sound, it's just you can't hear it.

the point of this tree falling in the forest is that
people claim that you can't know if something made a sound
if nobody was around to hear it.

Yes. since this question is placed in the science section of the website. Based upon observation when a tree fall in the forest it makes a sound. So why is a human observer required to make a sound.

It's supposed to be a philosophicol question about how do you know it happened if no one was there to observe it or listen to it.
more or less. One of thos wich came first the chicken or the eqq questions just to get people to think about things.

Yes, it makes a noise. Sound isn't only what you and I hear when something happens, sound is what's made when something happens. If the tree hits the ground it will make a sound whether there is any one around to hear it or not.

if a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound.

alot of people like to sound "intellectual" by asking this, as if it's some sort of unsolvable riddle.

Sorry to disappoint everyone, but it all depends on what you define as a "sound"

if you believe a "sound" is the vibration in the air, made by any moving object in an atmosphere, then yes, it makes a sound.

but if you believe a "sound" is something that the ear recieves, then translates and sends to your mind, then if no ears are there to hear it, then no, it does not make a sound.

(sorry if I just told you there's no santa claus)

The answer is Yes.
But you might also consider the questions:

If a tree falls in the woods, and it falls on a mime, does anybody care?

And if a tree falls in the woods, and it springs back up as a joke, do the squirrels freak out?

THAT's what I want to know!!

NO. The point here is that "noise" is simply the interpretation your mind gives to vibrations in there air, just as colour is the mind's interpretation of electromagetic radiation in a certain frequency range. Getting back to the tree - the noise only exists inside the human mind - if there is no one nearby to hear the noise, then all that exists is the vibrations in the air.

Someone else has already asked this question. It does make a sound, just no one is around to hear it. Just like if you are talking and no one is around, do you still make noise? Yes

Yes. There are lots of ears in the forest. Just maybe not human.
