yes they can....they fertalize the egg with a male during sex...so if no male they lay eggs but no baby will ever form...it is like in humans females have eggs and when not fertilized by a male then the human "lays the egg" during her period....

RE:
Can a hen lay an egg without a rooster?
How is the egg fertilized? How old does a hen have to be to lay eggs?

Yes. Hens will lay eggs even if there is no rooster around.
The rooster mates with the hen to fertilize her eggs, just the same as a man fertilizes his wife's eggs to make a baby.
Depending on the breed, hens will start laying fromm 4-6 months of age. The commercial layers such as the Pearl Leghorns or the Rhode Island Reds will all start laying at about 4 months. You don't have to do anything different - it just starts naturally.

Yes, hens lay eggs without a rooster. If you want your hens to sit on eggs and hatch them you will need a rooster. The eggs w/o a rooster are not fertile. Hens need lots of sunshine or light to lay eggs. Find a site on the Internet and read up. Remember that they need grit to pulverize their food. Also, if you are not sure how old the eggs are put them in a glass of cool water, if they sink they are fresh, if more than a half inch or so sticks out of the top of the water they may be bad. Crack the ones that stick out in a bowl by themself. If they float more than half way out, throw them out, they are stinkers.

The hen needs to be about 5 months old before she will lay eggs.
Eggs are fertilized by the rooster having sex with the hen.
The hen will lay eggs if there is or is not a rooster. Makes no difference to the hen she just lays eggs.

Absolutely, hens will lay without a rooster around. The rooster is only required if you want fertile eggs that will hatch.

Around half a year to a year for age, and the eggs are fertillized by the rooster mating with her. If there is no rooster she can still lay eggs, they just won't hatch.
Good for eatin'!

Of course they do. The rooster is necessary only to get fertilized eggs, not for eating but to get new chicks.
