it could be many reasons. here are a few. worker didnt wash his hand after going back on the field. the containers which contain the picked spinach had some bird dropping or some fertilizer with ecoli in it, therefore contaminating the spinach. the chlorine water which the leaves are put in to clean or decontaminate the spinach was not exactly clean. these are a few.

they fertilized with poop! and then didn't wash thoroughly - everyone should wash produce thoroughly once they bring home produce. responsibility ultimately rests on the person consuming the product, and sometimes you have to rinse each leaf, one by one - people are too lazy these days.
