I'm thinking of making my own beer, and before I invest in all of the tools, I would like to read a few comprehensive books about home-brewing. Any books that have been particularly helpful?

Though Charlie P's books are fine, he's outdated and a bit of a dinosaur now. Check out How to Brew by JJ Palmer. He also has a website with the first edition of the book to whet your appetite.

Any book by Charles Papazian. There are plenty of magazines as well. I've been homebrewing off and on for 16 years. Its a lot of fun, you'll enjoy it.
