You should probably ask this in the "religion" forum -- that's where you'll get lots of definitions of what a sin is, since it's the religious nutcases that define sin for themselves and everybody else.

From a rational point of view, there's no such thing as sin -- though profanity is usually considered bad manners in polite company, since it usually shows the profaner to have very little imagination in word use, and they must resort to low-class, common swearing to make a point :)

No profanity itself isn't, but words can be a reflection of what's in your heart, so if you use profanity a lot, or if you use it hardcore when you're angry, you've probably got some kinda sin going on. Like anger or something. And no anger itself isn't a sin, it's the level you allow it to go to where it turns to sin.

If the meaning behind any word that is hurtful or demeaning and vulgar than yes any word like that is not pleasing to God and would be a sin.Anyone who says there are no sins like a few people answering this question then I'd say they are in for a rude awakening real soon.

It's a very good question, especially as we are surrounded by profanity on all sides these days.
It still remains sinful however, despite common usage.

profanity is a sin, but saying a four-lettered word in itself isn't. it all depends on the context which you're using it. words like "****" and "****" were invented in order to describe grave degrees of depravity, and were intended for use in such contexts. even earlier translations of the bible described sin as "****". but if you use words like that to curse or to exaggerate the situation's degree of depravity, (e.g. "**** you", "****, that hurts", or "that gig was a piece of ****") then that is a sin. the bible says that the mouth that praises God must not be the same mouth that curses the people God made in His image; that's comparable to pouring salt into the same well from which you draw your drinking water (James 3:9-12).

personally this is how i do: i don't swear and i avoid four-lettered words whenever i can, but i don't feel obliged to censor them when i need to quote them or i happen to come across an occassion where the particular word and its connotation fits.

Romans 3 :no one is good, not even one. no one has understanding. no one is seeking god. all have turned away from god. their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. their speech is filled with lies.the poison of a deadly snake drips from their lips.their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. there is another scripture somewhere about foul language but i cant find it right now. a friend of mine asked me this same question and at the time i didn't have an answer. but yes i think it is a sin, but forgivable. i am learning so much about forgiveness right now. and that no matter how many times i keep sinning the same sin i need ti keep asking god for forgiveness like that part about turning your cheek 7 and 77 times if that makes sense and for me part of it is i think i will get so sick and ashamed of asking god for forgiveness for the same thing he will empower me to change. Satan wants to tell me not to go to god. sorry i got going rambling on this thing. thanks for the question. i have been working on not taking the lords name in wain, like not saying oh my god, or i swear to god. or when something great happens like a miracle, i quit saying, i cant believe it. because i can.

The third commandment is not to take the Lord's name in vain. In other word's if you were to use God or Jesus in any context other than praying or teaching, that would be sinning.

Blasphemy is sin so if the word is of or some how diminishes God then yes but if it is just a slang word then no. In my humble opinion.

According to the 10 commandments, thou shalt not take the lord's name in vain. This means if you say "god **** it" you have sinned.
