yes, that is why I have stopped shopping on ebay. Especially after being ripped off by a guy whom we reported for sending us a box of trash (literally) and charging us $35 shipping and the money we paid for what was supposed to be antiques.
Not only did the seller misrepresent the items as antiques, the box included what looked like a bunch of trash from someone sweeping up the floor of their garage...rat poison, leaves, dirt, a smashed can of lye, wadded up papers that had been previously soaked with something, old newspapers, used tape, dead insects, rusty coffee cans filled with rusty nails, an old decopage project, mouse droppings, etc.
When we informed EBAY of the violation, they said we had to take the entire box to an antique appraiser to prove that everything in the box was not antique...including the rat poison and smashed ajax can! Otherwise, we would not get our money back.
Ebay informed this guy that we had reported him, and so he started a negative rating campaign against us...and we still didn't get our money back! Not even for paying for the shipping weight of a box of literal trash!

Well, in truth, you were probably paying for the shirt with shipping fees. This probably was a $10.00 shirt, and the shipping was $3.00.
eBay makes their sellers pay a % of the final selling price, so some sellers jack up the shipping rates to compensate for that.
Sometimes, I will send the seller a message before I bid, and ask them to reduce the shipping rates.
But, if I'm buying something that is worth $10, and I'm only paying 1 cent, then I don't mind paying $12 to ship it. I do choose the ones with the reasonable shipping fees ahead of these others though.
I'm still getting great deals on eBay.
What irritates me is when I select "Lowest Prices First" when I'm searching for something, and all these 1 cent auctions always come up first, with various shipping costs. Makes it very hard to compare prices.

Yes, some sellers to overcharge. You need to watch out for those who ship any other way besides USPS Priority. Priority boxes are free. You should only be charged the actual shipping cost and a small handling fee. You have to remember that someone is packaging your product and has to drive it to the postal service. They are trying to add in their time and gas as well into the handling fee which is understandable in any business.
If they are not using priority or a service to where they can acquire the boxes for free then they are also charging you for boxes, packing material, the tape they use on the package.
If you feel you are being overcharged by an ebay seller, you can email a complaint against the seller. Ebay just started cracking down on seller's who over charges for example.....
A Brand New Sofa is 99 cents buy it now and then charge 3,000 for shipping. These people are getting out of paying for the Final Value Fee of the item so ebay misses out on their fee they are charging to place the add on ebay.
If you are not sure, just ask before you bid. Ask the seller, what is the shipping to your zip code and ask what fees are included in your shipping and handling. Also a great way to know if you are being ripped off is to ask for the weight of the item. You can go onto the USPS website and put in a weight , your zip code and theirs and get an estamted price. If its 3 to 5 times more..simply do not bid on their items. There are plenty of honest ebayers out there and if you can't stand those who are ripping them off then you need to avoid their auctions. If they are not making sells, they won't be on ebay.
Side Note: ebyer's who work from home should not charge a handling fee
eBay Listings serives charge approx $5 to $7 handling fee. This is to pay the shipper or employee for their time to package your product that you purchase.
Try sticking to just the smaller home ebayer's. There is always more than one ebayer selling the same product.
I hope this helped

Although I've never seen one that asked for $12 to ship a tee shirt, Some sellers do make their money on shipping. It's called handling and it's legal. I always know what the shipping is going to be and it helps me decide how high I'll bid on something. I usually won't bid if the shipping charge is higher than I know it would be from things I've bought in the past. Sellers that combine shipping can be good deals.

well it's now 11/4/2015 like YEARS later and it's still a problem. The main problem is this
1. US Mail or USPS
2. FEDEX
3. UPS
they all go up on shipping/handling charges periodically. Then EBAY charges a FEE to:
1. List
2. Sell
3. They take percentage of shipping
So if you buy a say Size Small -Large Tshirt VINTAGE USED then the buyer is in TEXAS and they're shipping to you in NY or LA they have to pay if they can GET it under 13 ounces a First Class rate. but if it's a bit heavier it must go priority mail by USPS.. Then that could cost if you put in flat rate envelope ike $6-7
for one shirt. The post office gives free flat rate boxes but they dont' seem to be giving out regular priority boxes anymore. One might be able to order a few on their site but I checked the other day all i saw was FLAT rate envelopes for priority and express. So that means everything they want you to ship is FLAT but in some cases you could ship cheaper by regular priority mail like with your own BOX not printed. So boxes cost a lot if you need a big one to ship like 15 items of clothes for PLUS size or Regular size person. YOu have to buy a box. If you don't guy wholesale even at walmarts its costly. If you send an old crapy box. customers complain .. if you buy a new one then you must pay $3 plus for boxes at Office Max.
so it's a business where sometimes many EBAYER get sick of playing the game. oNe must pay to list, sell, shipping percentage and for them to take paypal. So I think we live in society where nobody wants to pay for anything. Some buy whole bunch of clothes for 20 at last minute auction and want to have it shipped for nothing. Well that's hard to do.. Just saying
interesting topic

yes, shipping costs are too high. also the sellers are getting way to high on their items. but as long as people bid items way over what they are worth then the sellers are going to price things to high. if people would just slow down a little the sellers would have to drop their prices or go out of business. I have found a lot of good things on ebay but I am going to give it up because of the high prices.

Everything on Ebay is too high.
I like to internet shop and do it a lot. There was a toy my daughter wanted. It was higher on Ebay that it was at Toys R Us but people bid on it. The shipping was higher too. I don't bother with Ebay anymore. It has gotten way too hard to find a bargain.

yes i find it scandalous too
the reason is that if you are not satisfied with your 99c Shirt you can get that reimbursed but not the $12 shipping.
i think that eBay ought to set limits on the shipping costs that are commensurate to the price asked for
there was one item that was being sold for £0.01 with £35 shipping and was stating NO COLLECTIONS - i smell a rat fundraisingwise there too

Shipping costs have increased, but there are many sellers who are trying to profit from the shipping costs, which is wrong and against eBay rules.
Just don't bid on these seller's items.
