The last time I went (last year) it was 1 L of alcohol. In Europe, they generally package their alcohol in bottles that are 750 mL so that typically equates to one bottle.
Anything more than a bottle, you have to declare and pay taxes and duty -- not sure how much it is. Make sure that you do declare in case they go through your bags. Nothing worse than lying on your customs form to ruin a return trip home :)

It depends are you a tourist just looking to bring some back? We were stationed in Italy with the Navy and we shipped 75 bottles home in our household goods....Some of our friends sent over 300!
