my male corgi is about 18 weeks old and we have had him for about a month now. I want to take him to the dog park, but he is so mean to other dogs. just now our neighbors little dog got out, my dog goes up to it, they sniff and act like every thing is ok, then my dog attacked the other dog. The other dog submitted, AFTER being attacked, and my dog still tried to attack her. He cant get fixed till after he gets his shots this weekend, but will that even help? Could he be just trying to protect me? I didn't think that the breed was mean natured. He barks at new people till they pet him, then they are his best friend. I'm very calm and patient with him and he listens to me most of the time, but.... What to do?

SORRY if i didn't make it clear.... he knows i'm the boss... i made that clear on day one. And i meant that he will bark at a stranger till i take him up to that person....then he knows that they are ok. He has and on occasion still does get swatted, he sure DID today.

You're right, corgis usually are very sweet natured. Neutering will definitely help curb his aggression somewhat but he's still going to need training. You should not let this dog off leash until he has been trained and is dog friendly. He's much too young for obedience classes but why not take him to puppy kindergarden - those classes are mainly for socializing puppies and hopefully the trainer can give you tips there after watching the interaction between you, your puppy and other dogs.

Dogs need a lot of love and attention to make them into the fun and pleasant companions they can be. Most importantly, they need to know who is boss! Bad behavior that is tolerated by the owner soon becomes a regular behavior. The sooner the dog knows what is allowed and what is not, and who makes those decisions, the better.
Dominating your dog needs to be a part of all interactions. Make him sit and stay before being fed. Hold him down until he stops struggling when play gets too rough. Punish aggressive behavior right away.
As odd as this sounds, showing him who is boss can be accomplished by doing it exactly as his pack-mates would do, if he were a wild animal: hold him on the floor, stare him down, and nip him on the throat with your own teeth. Repeat whenever he displays any serious wilfullness.

I think that it is more that he is still young and not sure of his surroundings. My dog took about 5 months before behaving at the park with other dogs. He is also testing his grounds to see who is the Alpha and who will subbmit. You will have to introduce dogs while on a leash and take it from there. Once he is fixed he will calm down a bit but I would say expect it for a few more months.
As for the people thing that is just protecting, Its been 2 years with my girl and she still makes sure that no one comes near "Mommy & Daddy" until we approach them.

First, You need to be the boss-the alpha male. Right now HE is and he does whatever he wants-which to bark, and attack. You need to discipline him by showing him that he is not allowed to bark. Once he is submissive, then pet him, but not until he has been quiet. Your dog needs structure and discipline-not unlike small children. YOU must choose when he gets to do things, not him. YOU choose when he gets to stop and sniff the grass. When giving him toys, they are YOUR toys and he is only borrowing them, etc...Always keep your dog on a leash around other dogs. Our society is too litigious for you not to be cautious.

your dog thinks he's in charge. you should not let him bark at people till they pet him. that's his way of saying 'do what i say to do'. your dog needs training.
as for attacking other dogs?? that's a hard one to break but it can be done. this takes special training, patience and perseverance. if you don't have the time then just make sure your dog is always on a leash.
the best place to find good trainers will probably be your local vet or groomer.
good luck.

dont worry corgi's are weird sometimes they can be very selective of the dogs they like, and sometime they can start hating dogs they usually play with. Although, when he is fixed he will calm down at least a little

I think you should take your dog to dog school to teach you how to get the best out of your dog .You have to be the alfa you don`t tolerate bad behaviour.Dogs will tune in to your body language as well as the tone of your voice.

Fixing should settle him down alot you will notice a big difference. this happens alot with little dogs...it's called little dog, big dog syndrom. you should be calm and patient. beat him (not like brutally) Just make sure he knows your the boss
