Got one in my leg quite a few times, had to wake up and stand on it.
Stretches help. Stand facing a wall, put your hands on it, lean forward with your feet remaining flat -- to stretch your calf muscles.

I get these from time to time. Usually if I wear high heels for an extended period, I can count on getting one that night. On my wedding night, I awoke at like 3:00 a.m. absolutely SCREAMING in pain from a charlie's horse. It was the worst one I ever had. My poor hubby thought someone had broken into our hotel room and was attacking me. What I usually do to ease the pain is to grab my leg and rub it while moving my leg in a circular motion on the side of the bed. The muscle is contracting, and that's why it hurts. Afterwards, your muscle will feel sore in that area for a day or two, but it will go away 'til next time. Ouch!

to ease the pain get up and move it. It hurts more at first but in the end is well worth it so you don't spend days sore from it. Also one of the major causes of them is dehydration so make sure you stay hydrated to prevent them from happening. I used to get them all the time...now I only get them occasionally and its when i sleep in a bed other than my own.

I have had these plenty of times. You have a potasium deficiency. I have taken potassium supplements for years without a problem. Have not had one of these pains in a long time.
