I like most of the samples. It does help for hungry shopping and it's fun to be able to try something different, even if it's a small portion, when you're on a tight budget.
As to the conditions of the food, if you do pay attention, you would see the reps do take safety and health precautions. You're more likely to pick up nasty germs from eating the fresh produce than the samples.

Used to but I was in the restroom once and a guy left the urinal and left without washing his hands. A little later in the store I saw this same man handing out sausage on crakers with his bare hands. He even had some of those clear gloves he was supposed to have on.So I no longer sample the food.

Depends. If the person handing out the food is creepy looking I steer clear of the samples.
Depends on the food too.

no, not really. In fact I try to avoid those people pushing that food at me! Not because I think I won't like it, but it's in the middle of the grocery store, who knows what kind of germs have been floating around and landing on that stuff?!
