My 15 year old daughter wants to get a tatoo, i've always tried to let her take responsibility for her own decitions, and I dont want to just say no, because then she may decide to do it on her own. how can i make her understand the ramification of something that is so permanent???

Let her get her belly button pierced instead. She will be "rebelling" without it being totally visible - and she can just take it out when she gets sick of it.

Like I did.

My daughter is 22 and just got a very pretty tattoo. It's a lavendar-colored lily with pretty green leaves, at the top of her back next to one shoulder.

She wanted a tattoo ever since she was 17 years old, and we refused to allow it.

What I told her was that I felt she should wait until she figures out what she's going to do for a living and who she is going to marry. Many people are very turned off by the sight of a tattoo... and it can negatively affect the way people react to them.

I really think 15 is way too young to make a decision like that about something so permanent. She cannot legally do it on her own-- and if your daughter chooses to do something illegal, there's nothing you can do about that.
If she does, it shouldn't be on your conscience. But if you give permission, then it will be your fault.

to get one alone, you have to be 18. im sorry, but 15 is way too young , and theyve become trendy now, i am 25 and i have
10 of them, so i know what im talking about. Shes gonna get one,
and a year later not want it anymore
tell her youre not taking her to get one and she has to wait till shes 18, when shes 18 she can get whatever the hell she wants.
untill then, YOURE the mom. I am so sick of people being afraid to lay down the law anymore. youre the parent not visca versa.
im telling you, when she IS 18, the fascination will pass, and
now she wont be stuck with some dumb hummingbird on her back or something

You should just tell her it won't make you happy, and let it go. Legally, you can sue any business that gives her a tattoo without your consent until she's 18, I believe, so they probably won't do it without you there. Culturally, tattoos are now so common that it won't likely put her at any disadvantage in terms of life & work (as long as she doesn't want "Tupac Lives" on her neck!).

Look around you. A little more than one in five of the folks you see already have some ink.

Maybe you should help steer her away from something she might regret, than steer her away altogether.

Good luck! Aren't teenagers fun?

Ask her if she likes the same things that she did when she was 12. If she says no then tell her "why do you think that you will still like this tattoo in 3 years?" People change so much in their teens.
Just tell her that once she is 18 then it is her decision, til then, what mom says goes.
I am very pro tattoo for the art of it, not just because it has become so trendy.

Are the ramifications so drastic, as you seem to imply? I got a tattoo 12 years ago, and it hasn't stopped me from getting a bachelors, two masters degrees, and two-thirds of a PhD finished since that time.

What is the problem, exactly?

I wanted one when I was 15, I designed it and begged my mom to let me get it. Mom said no. When I turned 18 (or a few months after) I finally got it. I loved it! I'm not saying let her get it. I'm saying let her wait until she's 18 and sign for it herself. When she's a legal adult. Tattoos are an adult matter, not something kids should just run out and get. As an alternative, let her try Henna. It's inexpensive and last a few weeks and is beautiful.

You can't. You can try, and you may convince her to take you seriously and not get it. But she won't understand your arguements. The mind of an average fifteen year old is just not equipped to handle the concepts of permanent consequences to actions. The most you can reasonably hope for is to discourage her by talking about the pain of it, or convincing her to get something inconspicuous.

You can tell her that tatoos last forever and 15 is way to young. Show who pictures, go to google and find out stuff about tattoos.

Well, as the parent, you (should) have control over her. Say she can, but not until she has reached a certain age that YOU pick out. And/or do some research on the internet about tattoos. Emphasize the BAD things about them.
