I am a college student with mild retardation. I have a very difficult time knowing that this is who I am. People treat me really bad at school and always pointing out my disability. When ever I'm around people, I'm really scared and nervous because I know that they are looking at me because of my condition. What should I do?

well, the fact that you asked such an intelligent question seems to negate the idea that you are mentally impaired. i'd say you are quite intelligent. truthfully, mean people are the stupid ones...just feel sorry for them, and brush off their rude remarks. cruel behavior indicates a serious case of self-hatred on their part.
a good way to deal with learning disabilities is to get some quality self hypnosis cd's...there are some really effective products out there if you know where to look. a good place to start would be
InnerTalk subliminal learning products - they are on the web.
you don't seem retarded to me - probably you have a learning disability - my wife is a teacher, and she says half of the learning disabled kids in her classes are really geniuses. they just dont learn the way most students do. she says the trick is to find whatever learning style works for you. don't get discouraged by the labels people stick on you. just be yourself and learn any way you can. ignore mean people - they have nothing to offer, nothing to look forward to, and ultimately, nothing to look back on. they live empty lives.
to value the opinion of a fool is to be a fool yourself.
scrape 'em off. good luck!
ps. you should change your yahoo answers name...why call yourself by a name given to you by ugly people? see yourself through the eyes of people who think highly of you! you should name yourself MonuMental or something like that LOL!
pps. do you go to a very small college? small schools tend to be more provincial and high-schoolish. it might be worth your while to transfer to a larger school - you will blend in better, have a larger peer group, and find it easier to avoid nasty-minded idiots. big schools don't have such obvious cliques - the social scale is less stratified, and people can usually find others with common interests .

Seems like you have good writing skills maybe you just need to find out what you are really good at and do it. As the other students see that you have special abilities they will want to be your friend.
It's hard being different, I was and still am very shy. I always sat in the back of the class and hated it when the teacher would ask me a question. I never dated in high school because I was too scared to talk to girls. I found that I had some special skills, I like working with my hands and I'm good at fixing things.

Considering how well you spelled out everything in your question, I find it very hard to believe you have a mild diability. Have you ever been tested for High Functioning Autism, also known as Asperger's Syndrome? The reason I ask this question is because I myself have the condition. I'm disabled myself, and I'm A-OK with it. I wish you good luck. :)

I wish I had an easy answer for you but there isn't any. You can't change ignorance. Usually by college age, this kind of thing starts to subside but some people are just mean. I applaud you for continuing your education.

You've got better spelling skills than anyone I have ever seen on this site, or any other for that matter. I can tell you are intelligent just from your post. I think the others will see that as well. Kids are just so cruel.

Keep on keeping on honey, who have what they want. Feel good, as I'm sure you do, keep being happy about where you are in life now, as they are not. Continue to be happy. I know people looking at you now days is a big thing, Feel good about it, you have plenty for people to look at. Just look at what you are doing, and feeling good about it, and they are not.

Keep working hard and show them you can keep up, and sometimes outdo them.
Good luck.
