How to Litter Train a Cat
Most cats will train themselves to use a litter box, but what if they seem to "forget" and start using your bed instead? Why is your kitty avoiding the litter box all of a sudden? Retrain them using this guide.

Steps
Make sure the litter box is cleaned daily. Your cat will start using other places if the litter box is too dirty.
If you have recently changed brands of litter, try changing back. Cats can be picky.
If your cat has just been declawed, their paws may be hurting when they dig in the litter. Declawing is a cruel practice, but if you've already done it to your cat, you'll have to deal with the aftereffects such as biting and litter box problems. Try using a softer litter, made from corn cob or newspaper, both of which can be found in pet stores.
If that doesn't help: Put the litter box and your cat in a small room, like a bathroom. Make sure he has plenty of food and water. Check on your cat once every few hours. If the cat has eliminated correctly in the box, praise the cat and let them out for some supervised playtime, or give them a treat. Then put them back in the room. Repeat two or three times until it seems that your cat has "gotten it".
If the cat misses the box, place the feces in the litterbox and do not pay further attention to the cat. Leave the room and check again in a few hours.
If the cat still refuses to go in the litter box, find a pet crate that is big enough to barely hold your cat(when lying down), food, water, and a small pan of litter (the top of a shoe box works well). Most cats will not defecate where they sleep or eat, and so your cat will choose the litterbox. When he's mastered that, move back to the bathroom until you're sure he's trained.
If your cat is still avoiding the litterbox, take him to the vet to make sure there is no underlying medical reason for this behavior.

Tips
When you move, it's a good idea to confine your cat to a small area of the new house at first. This will ensure that he feels safe and knows where his litter box is, and reduce house soiling.
Never punish your cat for soiling in the house by rubbing their nose in it. They'll just learn to soil in a place where you can't see them doing it.

I was going to suggest what our vet told us to do one time when we had a new kitten who had been living outside all its life. She said to wet & wring out a paper towel, put him in the litter box, then rub his bottom with the paper towel. He will think it is the mother cat licking him to tell him where to go. It worked beautifully... never a problem!

But then I see you have other cats? That could be the problem. They are social creatures and they establish an alpha cat from the very beginning. The lesser cats all defer to the ones higher on the heirarchy. Sometimes, a cat who won't conform is not allowed to use the food dishes nor the litter box. Cats are sneaky, you might not see what they do, but they will chase away any cats they don't like or they see as not good enough.

You might try giving him his own litter box in a separate place and watch for a couple days to make sure the other cats don't take it over. Sometimes, a cat just has to be moved to a new home because of things like this.

pick up each mess you find and place it in the litterbox and then put your cat there...sometimes they jump right out and sometimes they will cover it up.

make sure to praise your cat when it does use the litter.

if you have multiple cats (like me), you may want to add an additional litter box to your house.

lots of times cats will scratch the edges of their litterbox to leave a scent, and this could very well intimidate younger kittens.

never spank a cat either...they have no idea what the punishment is for and they will draw away from you.

deffinitely take any solid mess and place it in his litter pan. and put him in there alot. i have heard that young kittens sometimes don't quite grasp the concept of going in the litter box because the mothers teach them, so if taken from the mother before it's taught, it has a harder time.

any time he messes, make sure to clean and deoderize the area thoroughly, because with the scent he will associate the spot with going.

what worked for my 6 week old kitten - she was going everywhere but the litter box. contain the kitten in one room for the most part, you can let him out, but don't let him stray too far from the room with his litter box. every once in a while, put him in the litter box and take his front paws and make a digging motion with them. don't hold him too long against his will though. as soon as i showed echo she can dig in her litter box, she hasn't gone anywhere else. make sure to give him treats when he does use it!

If your new kitty has to share the catbox that might be the problem.. Get him or her their own & keep them separate from your other pets until it get's used to it. Some cat's have issues with a box used by other cats. Good Luck!

try training your cat by takeing your cat's paw and dragging it in the litter in the box, also make sure you clean out the litter box often.
