Yes, If that person is man/God they can. That is why Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. That is the only way He could come into the world with out sin, and be able to save all souls. If He was just a man than no. Only the Son of God could do what He did.

Only he who does not owe the debt can pay it off in someone else's name.
Jesus did not owe the debt, as Jesus did not sin. In this, he is the only one able to pay for anyone's sins.
A regular man--no, a regular man cannot die for another man's sins and have those sins absolved. He may be able to die to spare another person imprisonment, say, but he cannot die to spare another person's soul.
Jesus, being God, could...and did.

A descendant of Adam cannot die for another man's sins, but God can create Himself a sinless human body through which His blood can be used to cleanse men from sin.

A Man already did... Jesus is BOTH God AND Man... Every sin committed by man, woman, and child that was, is, and is to come was placed on Jesus while He was dying on the cross about 2,000 years ago... He paid the penalty for all that sin by enduring the wrath of His Father and afterwards, the absence of fellowship with His Father - something that we could NEVER fathom in this world...! He was born sinless, lived a sinless life among us, died in our place to grant us access to God and rose from the dead to lead us to life in Him... It DOESN'T get any better than THAT...!

You are right, the other answers seem somewhat stupid because Jesus is said to be the son of god while others say he IS god. Either way, while he was on earth he was just a human man. Therefore the rule applies, a MAN cannot die for another MAN'S sins.
Good question though.

Agreed. The Old Test states as much several times. I wonder why people ignore that?
And I've yet to have someone actually quote Jesus saying "The only way to remit your sins is to believe in my death. And the only way youwill go to heaven is to believe I was resurrected 3 days later"

Death by crucifixion was one of the most painful experiences imaginable, and Jesus' suffering on the cross was far more agonizing that anything most of us will ever have to endure.
But Jesus' physical suffering was only a sign of a much deeper kind of suffering He was enduring: the suffering of His spirit. When Jesus died, the face of His heavenly Father was hidden, and He was torn from the presence of God. He who had enjoyed unbroken fellowship with His Father in heaven from all eternity now faced Hell itself. This was His real agony—an agony far deeper than that which any other person has ever endured.
Why did He have to endure so much suffering? The reason is because all our sins were placed on Him, and when He suffered and died He was taking upon Himself the punishment we deserve. You and I only deserve judgment and hell—but He took our judgment and hell upon Himself. The Bible says, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us" (2 Corinthians 5:21). He took your place!
Why did He do this? He did it because of love! He loves us, and He wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Sin is serious—so serious that it sent Jesus to the cross. But God's love is greater, and because of Jesus' death and resurrection we can be saved. Turn to Christ and accept Him into your life today.

It's happened in prison several times, so you are wrong. They executed several people, including one woman, who they later found out was innocent.
So, one person died for the SINS of another.
It's called American Justice and that's why sthe Supreme Court banned it for a while.
DNA makes things a little bit MORE beyond a reasonable doubt now!

Well the 'old testament' or more to the point the Torah [certainly the Pentateuch] [sure they're not the same but similar], ok, well the Torah says that *everyone* must account for themselves. The Talmud 'may' [or otherwise] disagree somewhat, but the Torah is ok with it. I just haven't read the Talmud.

It all depends upon your mood...if you want to believe one man can die for another's sins, read this part of the bible :
Exodus 20:1-6 : And God spake all these words, saying...Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them : For I the Lord thy God am a jealous god, visiting the iniquity (sins) of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.
Or......
Deut. 24:16 : The fathers shall NOT be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers : every man shall be put to death for his OWN sin.
Pick and choose...pick and choose...
