I gave my daughter a Canon SD360. It is small, has a 3" display, 6.0 Megapixels, with rechargeable battery, uses a secure digital card and does a nice job with "video." It will fit in a shirt pocket and has a Titanium case. She loves it, and I get a lot of pictures of my Grandson. Hows that for a good deal? You could spend less and not get as good a package. You could spend more and be frustrated by all the bells and whistles on a "professional grade," camera.

You want high quality but digital - the two don't go together totally at this point. The average digital is 4 or 5 megapixils, you can get 10 or 12 is a professional (very expensive) model. 35mm, the old standby, is equivalent to 24 megapixils. That being said, stick with some of the name brands like Nikon, Kodak, etc. Avoid the brands that were never in the photo business before as the quality and/or setup may be lacking.

Casio makes a 5X and is said to be excellent with video. Very compact as well. It's the EX P505, goes for about $300. It takes an MPEG-4 video at 30 fps, has a 2 inch rotating LCD. I liked it, and I dont usually like Casios.

The one I am currently using is Nikon Coolpix 7600 with 7.1 megapixels. I think it is okay but not with night photo. So it depends on what kind of pictures you will like to take.
