It's a test of faith! Anything that doesn't make sense is to test your faith. That's how Christians can always have a rebuttal to any argument. They either say "God did it", "because it's part of God's plan", or "it's to test your faith". All of these make them look like morons to everyone but themselves.

Worms are an important part of our eco-system. They churn and enrich the soil, so plants (including a lot of what we eat) can grow better....not to mention they're food for birds, and other animals, that we and other critters depend on for food.

Worms also burrow through soil and aerate.
