e Coli is a bacteria (more specifically, gram negative bacilli) that actually is a normal organism that lives in our gut. Illness from e Coli occurs when one gets immunocompromised or when a pathogenic strain of the bacteria gets into our food. The ones in the news these days are these more pathogenic ones. Usual symptoms from e Coli infection deal with the gastrointestinal tract. Nausea, vomiting, and severe diarrhea (sometimes bloody ones) can occur. Fever, rigors, and hypotension can happen when the bacteria overwhelms the body's system and becomes bloodborne.

Some infected people have mild diarrhea or no symptoms at all. Most identified cases develop severe diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Blood is often seen in the stool. Usually little or no fever is present. Symptoms generally appear three to four days after exposure, but can take as long as nine days to appear. Persons experiencing these symptoms should contact their physician.
