I live in the south and I am totally open to people of all races and cultures. But I have observed one thing in my travels ( and I've travelled internationally ):
There are Biggots and Racists EVERYWHERE YOU GO. There are just as many of them in the North, East and West as there are in the South. I live in a college town in NW Arkansas and there are over 50 different language/cultures represented in our elementary schools. And you know what? I 'm proud of that! I think its fantastic!!
I would dearly love to know what race/ethnicity you are, if you wouldn't mind talking about this more, please, email me?? I would love to talk to you more about this. Maybe I could give you some more insight on how to 'handle?' southerners? LOL We generally are pretty easy going; just don't turn your nose up at grits! LOL

If you are taking a road trip that far you should be on major interstates/ highways the whole trip. Therefore you should have no problems. I know first hand there are still a few small towns where you don't want to be after dark if you are a minority-or at least that is local rumor. Just don't go driving around little podunk towns in the middle of the night. I am not a minority but my ex-husband is Native American- we got pulled over in a little town in south Oklahoma and questioned and got a ticket from a cop with a KKK man tatooed on his forearm- no joke. Freaked us out. I grew up in Las Vegas and something like that would never be allowed there. Scary. You will be fine. Stay on the highway and stop at all the tourist attractions along the way. The trip will be great!!

Back in the late 70's, I was driving thru Mobile Alabama and it was getting dark. I was on route 10 and there was a Klan member with a sign that read Meeting Tonight with a big arrow pointing the way. I could'nt believe that kind of stuff still went on. Also in the early 70's I was bartending in a place called the Bayou Bar in Lafayette La, and the black people wern't allowed to come in the bar. They had to go around to a window in the back to get there beer to go. I know that was over 30 years ago and I have often wondered if it was still going on .

I am not sure what minority group you are in, but there are so many minorities in the South that it can't be that bad everywhere. In Camden County, GA just before Florida on I-95 the police will search anyone they pull over regardless of anything. And I mean SEARCH.
Drive with the flow of traffic and don't get in a hurry and you should be fine.

The whole country is overloaded with bigots. They have somewhat learned to watch their mouths. The South is actually not too bad.
