If you are referring to the laser treatment ALT for glaucoma then it is a very safe and effective (up to 80%). However I would only have it done by a glaucoma specialist and not just a general ophthalmologist.

ALT, if you are referring to the Alanine Transaminase in the liver, can be elevated in many different conditions. For example, alcohol use can elevate these liver enzyme tests. The higher these numbers get, it usually means the liver is getting more inflammed from a particular disease process. It is concerning once ALT and AST (another liver enzyme) gets into the 2-300 range and when they are up in the thousand range, that usually indicates acute hepatitis. With any elevation of the test though, a physician's evaluation should be sought. Only with a full evaluation of other tests can you find out why this test is abnormal.

If you're referring to ALT as in liver enzymes, if it's outside of the normal range (usually above 35 or so depending on which lab you go to) that indicates damage is occurring to the liver. You should definitely see a specialist, such as a gastroenterologist. They routinely deal with the liver and can do further testing to see why your liver is inflamed. Some diseases, such as Hepatitis C, have no outward symptoms but quietly cause liver damage for years unless it is discovered through tests such as the ALT. Good luck.
