Secrets are a sign of dysfunction.
Confidentiality on the other hand, is normal and healthy.
Is this information normal and healthy?
Are you helping someone continue to dysfunction?
Most of the time it is just best to tell your own story, and I can't tell you all the horrible things than can happen to someone who repeats gossip or personal information, but it almost always comes back to bite you in the a**. Better to forget about it, because in a hundred years who will care? Not worth the trouble really, unless it is.

I believe that, if you give your word that you will keep a secret, you should keep it. Then there are times that keeping a secret is not the best choice. For example; your friend has told you that he/she is planning to do harm to himself/herself, your friend has told you that he/she is planning to do harm to someone/something else, your friend has told you that he/she is planning to do something illegal, or things of the sort. Think this through before making any hasty decisions, but don't wait too long. Finally, if you do decide against keeping the secret, be sure that you go to someone that you can trust will handle the situation with care.

When one of my friends told me a secret that I really wanted to discuss, I told a friend who had absolutely no contact with my other friends, and changed the name of my friend. That way I still got to talk to someone, without hurting my friend in anyway.
