I believe we were holding our own, we had beaten the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain, which stopped the German invasion plans dead, by which time Hitler was much more worried with the Russians on the Eastern front than us. We would have carried on fighting using leased equipment from the good old USA, until the point that the USA would be worried that the Russians would have to much of a hold on Europe, and the Americans would have then have joined the battle against Germany when it best suited there interests, sounds a bit like every other American conflict since.

obscureguitarhero - wouldnt have been fighting on two fronts if the Americans had not joined us, wouldnt have had the resources to stage the invasion of France, probably would have invaded Italy and fought our way through to Germany that way.

Richard J - I never said the Americans didnt keep us afloat during the war, with supplies, oil, ammunition, and war machines, my point was it was all payed for eventually by us was it not! You didnt give it to us out of the kindness of your hearts, even though Britain and the commonwealth with the Russians were fighting pure evil.

America was never all that bothered about Hitler, Nazi's or socialist Germany- they couldn't give a toss. But the Russians and Communisim- I'll come back to that point.
Know then, when was it that America actually joined ww2? Oh, yes. After Pearl Harbour. And who were they initially at conflict with? Ah, yes. Japan. America had joined the war- but only in the Pacific and only because they were attacked.
Prior to this point they had been providing Britain with supplies. Weapons, munitions, equipment, food ect. But out of the kidness of their hearts and their hatred of Hitler? No. It took Britain years to pay back the cost of all that 'help'.
America still happily sat back watching Europe knock three tonnes of shite out of each other- until it saw Russia doing very well on the Eastern front. It was then that America joined. Right at the very end of the war- to stop communisim and not Hitler- and then have the cheek to say they had won it!!?
Britain would have still beat Hitler and the Nazi's without Americas help- it would just have taken longer.

Lets get this straight ,after America entered the war they also supplied the Russians with food ,medicine and war materials all russian industry had been destroyed ,where did the soviets get the gas for the mighty t 34 ,if the yanks and the brits haddent supplied russia the russians would have lost. The britsh would have fought the germans to a standstill till Hitler nuked us lets remember the germans were not that far behind the yanks ,if the japs had only attacked the non american dependancies the japs would own the pacific now.

A few things our English cousins fail to realize about US support during WWII.
The largest ground campaign you fought against the Nazi's, before the yanks arrived, as I recall, was Dunkirk. We all know how you faired in that campaign.

The battle of Britain was indeed a gallant battle, however a good number of those people up there , were Canadians and Yanks, so don't go taking full credit for that one, either.

Much of the war materials that you and the Russians were working with came from the good old USA, and that included food and rations as well.

As far as pay back, I'd like someone to show evidence that Great Britain or Russia ever repaid the US for it's contribution to the war effort. You can bet that this debt was dumped into the Marshall Plan, following the war.

Until the Yanks arrived, Great Britain had not proven itself in combat, against the Nazi's, so your speculation of what might have happened is pure poppycock, as they say in England!

Subsequent American wars were fought by politicians rather than soldiers, unfortunately. These boneheads learned nothing from that old man in the wheel chair. He taught us all that entering a war was not a popular thing to do, and until you're forced to, avoid it at all cost! We did that, that is until Dec 7, 1941, at which time we were attacked by the Japanese.

The biggest lessen we learned, but have since forgotten, is to fight that war with one objective, unconditional surrender of the enemy. Nothing else mattered, dilomacy was forgotten until that one objective was achieved. We need to review our objectives, as far as this enemy is concerned. We need to either get out now, or get in to win! There is no in between!

What the Americans here don't realise is that Nazi Germany offered the UK a deal. We (the Empire) didn't have to get involved as Hitler promised to leave the British Empire alone (whether he could be trusted is another matter), along as we stood aside.
However, King George VI & Churchill said no deal. Infact the King was quoted as saying he would rather lose the Empire than let Naziism walk the face of the earth unchallenged.
Another thing Americans may like to look into was 'who exactly were the Bund & who in Congress / the Establishment supported them?' To give you a starter ...one of them had them the surname Kennedy.

Long before the US joined the war officially. Many Americans were fighting side-by-side with the Brits. Americans volunteered to serve our friends and fight Hitler.

Americans have never needed their government to tell us what is right and wrong. We stand up for what we believe and always will. England may have staved off the German army and defeated them without America help. But they would have done it a very high cost of British lives. It not what would have happened, it's that we did and have continued to stand up and support each other in the faces of many enemies. And we will continue to.

Well yes England had a good chance of staving off a German invasion (thanks to their precious Home Fleet and Royal Air Force), and yes the Russians slowly but surely bled the Germans dry fighting Kursk-type battles... but the war would be extremely protracted with many more casualties on both sides (holding your own does not a victory make).

As to invading Germany through Italy...that first assumes you defeat Rommel in North Africa, which despite el-Alamein would have been highly unlikely had there not been a second front via French North Africa to divide his limited resources (which I seriously doubt the Commonwealth could launch on their own even with USA lend-lease).

And another thing...the Germans declared war on the USA shortly after Pearl Harbour...so they would have gone to war against them regardless unless the USA chose to ignore it (which I highly doubt).

so if america hadn't have joined us they would have joined us is what your saying. But if they hadn't joined at all i recon there was a good chance we would have survived, the russians were already causing them major problems and to invade the UK would have taken a lot of men and machinery which they did not have available in France. Also Hitler never wanted to invade the UK because he liked the UK and its empire and wanted to create one just like we had (together we would rule the world!) so they probably would have left us alone and concentrated on Russia. However the world would definately be a different place if it wasn't for the USA, it was them that broke the stalemate in europe, if they didn't join the war probably would have gone on for much longer

it's hard to say with so many different factors at play, my guess is that Britain would have been worn down negotiated a reluctant truce with Hitler as he still had respect for Britain. eventually becoming a satelite state. Did Degaulle really tell Americans to get out of France in a week? did'nt realise he was so ungrateful!

You're correct about the battle of Britain. We were out of trouble... but because at that time alliances counted for something, we were "out of honour" obliged to fight for other people's freedom. Thus, the Americans were forced (Pearl Harbour could have been avoided had the British and Danish secret services not sought to suck in the US) to enter the fray.

But,at a cost... America did so on condition they bankrupted the UK.

Isn't it true that Germany lost the war primarily because it was fighting on 2 fronts?
Hitler was fighting both west and the east (against the Russians).
