plasma and lcd are two different technologies. They both have HDTV (high definition tv) models.
Plasma uses light diodes to produce a picture. LCD uses liquid crystal display. For all intents and purposes, aside from the technology, they are the same. They are thin enough to hang on the wall, the have great pictures, and they both now come in very big sizes.
Plasma has been out in the larger sizes longer, but does not mean that the technology is inferior. Actually, I prefer plasma because with lcd, moving pictures seem to trail. Still pics are unreal. Plasma's bulbs will go out, but so will the lcd's display.
No matter which you are planning to get, make sure you get HDTV. They are so reasonable now that it does not make sense not to get it.

The main difference is the way the image is produced, plasma is a gas while LCD is a liquid, however there are pro's and cons to each.
LCD tends to show more 'ghosting' this is when a fast moving image on the screen leaves a trail behind it, this happens because the LCS is unable to react to the changes in image quick enough.
This effect is less noticeable on Plasma.
Also both LCD and Plasma are susceptible to 'screen burn', it you what MTV or a similar channel that displays it's logo constantly in the corner of the screen, when you turn over you will see this image 'burnt' into the screen. This will heal itself in time but on some models can take 10-15 minutes if very bad.
Newer models recover much quick, in just a few seconds. Although both have this problem LCD again comes off worse.
However, LCD does provide the sharpest images (assuming you don't watch something that induces ghosting!
either way get HDTV (High Definition) you may not use it immediately but you will be glad in a couple of years when everything is beamed hi def, it really does make a HUGE difference to the image quality. (especially if you have an Xbox 360)
Hope that helps

a LCD screen using crystals to make up the display, rather like the monitors used for computer screens.
Plasma screens use a gas to represent the display, and is trapped between two layers.
Plasma screens cost a lot of money and are not economical to buy.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display - Crystals are orientated by an electric charge to display a picture. Plasma uses a gas in a sealed 'tube' which is once aggain manipulated by electrical charge.

lcd is liquid crystals plasme does not distort when you look at it from a side angle because it dosnt have cto take in consideration ot the pixels (dots per inch)

Plasma are not a good buy. Create too much heat when in use and wear out.
LCD are cool in use and last for ages

technically
plasma-picture is made by dots 37" and above
lcd -picture is made by lines -sharper - upto 37" sony, samsung have 40" models philps have 42" in lcd.
life (based on 6hrs a day viewing)
plsma-12 years lcd-18years
manufacturers moving towards lcd because technology is here since casio calculators. easier maintenance. less suseptable to screen burn. less chance of having dead pixels thus chaeper to manufacture and sell.
