We can thank Pope Gregory the VI for that. He made the claim in the early 600's. Some say its because he wanted to show Christ's love for sinners, some say he was just a weird guy.
FYI: About 25% of women at this time were named Mary...just to add to the confusion.

First Mary Magdalene does not occur in the Old Testament but the New. Nowhere does it say she was a either unclean or a whore, there is the parable of the woman and the "cast the first stone" speech, a separate parable involving a harlot named Mary, and several, completely separate references to Mary Magdalene. It must be remembered that in that part of the world at that time, Mary was one of the most common female names there was. Protestants claim, without the least Scriptural basis, that the three women were the same person. Pope John Paul II stated some years back that not only was Mary Magdalene not a prostitute, the Church was wrong to ever let it be said she was. In point of fact, after Jesus death, she had as many followers as Peter, the Magdalene Sect, and they believed she was Jesus' wife and the mother of his child.

Mary Magdalene wasn't in the Old Testament, she was in the New Testament. I don't think the Bible portrays her at all like a whore, it's the context we place on it... in other words, how we we choose to interpret it.
Chrisitianity isn't the problem either. Christianity is quick to say that there is no such thing as gender in worship and service of God. But, it's rather our male-oriented society that tries to subjegate women in order to make the male more superior.

Unclean may have been not following Jewish rules for cooking in her house, too. No where does it say she was a whore, that is man's doing, nothing like getting some uptight , upright bible thumping old boy to sit up in his seat and pay attention!
Ever notice that women also got the sh*tty end of the stick in the Bible..Bad girls , too, Delilah, poor big dumb Sampson, Jezebel, got ate by dogs, some got stoned ( I mean stoned, stoned, real rocks lol) Moses had his sister-in-law stoned to death for adultery. Lot's wife turned to salt for looking over her shoulder, it doesn't say they were right behind her fornicating, only her home and the city were being destroyed...but God was playing mind games? Don't peek, I'll turn you into a statue, Haha!
The Bible doesn't confuse me, didn't confuse Thomas Jefferson either:
"I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition [Christianity] one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded on fables and mythology."--Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Short, _Six_Historic_Americans_ by John E. Remsberg

It was a priest in the late 1600 that made Magdalene into a whore. I'll look for his name...
i do remember reading that because there are so many Marys in the bible it was confusing and he decided to cut one of the picture, it was easier to make Magdalene look like a whore. That would reinforce the divinity of Jesus.

You are correct. However, not all christianity believe she was that. But she absolutely was not the wife of Jesus. Unclean could mean many things. Perhaps unclean in soul.

some Bible historians believe that categorical, she or a minimum of the female component replaced into written out of the classic Gospels and that she is given lots bigger status in diverse Gnostic records, despite if many are incomplete and it extremely is understood that lots have been destroyed. Gnostics have been Christians (Christian Gnostics) and Christianity could've been Valentinian Gnostic Christianity yet yet another guy have been given picked over Valentinus simply by fact the 1st bishop and that formed the path of Christian doctrine and literature. Many Gnostics understood the Christ tale to be metaphorical---no longer probably.

A lot of the confusion comes simply from the fact that the bible was first passed down by word of mouth for several hundred years, then translated to and from lots of different languages, over and over again for another several hundred years. Remember the "telephone" game from elementary school, where all the kids sit in a circle; the first kid whispers something in the second kid's ear to repeat and pass around the circle, but by the time it gets back to the first kid, it's totally different than how it started. The bible is pretty much the same. You really can;t take it word-for-word (and anyone who does is kinda fooling themselves) because every bit has been translated and edited and re-written so many times, there's no telling what it really means.

First of all her name is in the New testament only, read it for yourself instead of beleiving another.
Second, the Catholic church said that, not the bible.
What does the bible say? Try the NIV version, and get the truth, not a fabrication and addition from anyone else, they are lying.
