My mom's dog constantly itches and it is driving both of them nuts. There are vet remedies ($$$$$$) but does anyone know of home remedies? She has tried shampoos and tried to get the dog to eat vitamin e in her food but is real finicky. Any suggestion is appreciated. thanks

the dog most likely has fleas. you may never see any fleas on the dog, but they could still have them. My dog was loosing hair where she was itching and biting so bad. I looked and looked for fleas, but found none.
I took her to the vet and I got her flea medicine and she doesn't itch anymore.

Sometimes 'hot spots' are an allergic reaction. Have you changed the dog's food? What about carpeting, laundry soap[if the dog sleeps on the bed] or maybe the bathing you're doing? You really need to see the vet....mites may even be causing the itch.

You could try some brewers yeast (we put it in their food) but if he's finicky, you might have to force it in his mouth. You can get it at the local walmart. Also check the food for Chicken by-products. Alot of dogs are allergic to them. You don't need to go to the Vet unless he itches them so bad that he infects them. Stop him whenever he starts biting or itching.

sounds like you should take it to the vets.
even if only to find out what the problem is. you may be able to use a home remedy on the dog but first you have to find out whats wrong with it.

good luck.

You can go to your Vet and get cortisone shot, My vet sells me one every month so that I give the dog the shot and it cost me $10.00 per shot this is worth it to stop the problem, I also wash my dog (good) one time a week and this will stop the itch.
You can also get cortisone pills that help.

My dog had them and just shaving the area helped a LOT! They are caused by excess moisture and shaving helps keep the area dry. Try it!!

Shave the area and keep it dry so it heals, we have a cream that we got from PetSmart that we add to it also

rub the hot spots with regular, over the counter cortisone cream. i dont think it hurts them if they lick it off (it never hurt my dog), just make sure to rub it in.

tea tree oil is helpful, and non-toxic

I recommend you spend the extra money to get pure tea tree oil rather than a blend.
