The USMC (United States Marine Corps) is a branch of Service under the Department of the Navy. The Navy was created 13 October 1775. The Marines were created 10 November 1775.
The Marine Corps serves as an amphibious force in readiness. Today, it has three primary areas of responsibility, as outlined in 10 U.S.C. § 5063, originally introduced under the National Security Act of 1947:
1) The seizure or defense of advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns
2) The development of tactics, technique, and equipment used by amphibious landing forces
3) "Such other duties as the President may direct."
The Navy's stated mission is "to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas."
The Navy provides mobility & transport to the Marines as well as combat medics (USN Corpsman).
For the most part, the Marines have better uniforms, a more motivated attitude, pilots with an outstanding grasp of close-air-support, and a limited knowledge of the use of dining utensils.

They do both protect our waters along with the coast guard and every other branch you mentioned. While the Marines do fall under the Department of the Navy, they have their own command structure. The Navy does supply most of their support functions. The Navy's main job is to project a self-reliant presence around the world. In today's modern forces just about every branch of service have units that are redundant with the other branches.Believe it or not the U.S. Army has more ships under it's control than the U.S. Navy.

The Marines are the infantry forces of the US Navy, they are not a separate branch. Their specialty is to take over a beach front, secure it so other forces can move into it. The spanish translation for Marines is "Infantes de Marina" or "Naval Infantry."
They are used to solve a simple problem: you can project force with ships and planes, but you can't hold terrain with either of these, you need troops on the ground to hold it. The Marines jump in, hold the beach until the Army can move a bigger force, then they move to the next mess that they have to deal with.

the navy and marine corps make up the department of the navy which is part of the department of defense. the navy's job is to keep the sea lanes open for international trade. if the sea lanes are not open no ship either cargo or passenger would be able to get from one port to another. the marines serve as security aboard navy ships and are a mobile military force. there job is to take over a enemy's position and then hand the land over to the army. on naval ships that are marine landing types or gators, the marines job is to go ashore and be victorious in that area. navy corpsman are attached to marine combat units as a medic.

The mission of the Marines is officially to seize and hold bases for the Navy . They have proven that they are an effective fighting force where the Navy can't go , mountains / deserts ect .
In early times ( Greek / Roman ) and beyond they were the force which boarded enemy ships or repeled boarders .

The Marines are the assault landing force for the Navy. They do the ground work that the Navy requires. In the grand scheme of the military, they the first troops in most combat areas. Then the Army pushes in from the coast.
