The 4 kids that get 'eliminated' are just examples of modern sloth, avarice, vanity and generally revolting human qualities. I doubt there is a religious significance.

Maybe, but it could just be a coincidence. They were no doubt supposed to be bad, and I think it would be difficult to make them so while completely avoiding any of the "deadly sins". If there were seven of them I would have no doubt that it was intended.
