I have a male and a female cocaktiel for three months now. THey sometimes fight. They havent mated yet or preened each other but although they sleep together, sometimes eat together, they both also go in the nest box but they never go in the box together. What i did was seperate them into 2 diffrent cages to see waht happens. They both were trying to go to each other by biting the cage. IS this a sign of true bonding?Even if it is why dont they preen, feed or mate each other?

Sounds like if they are trying to break into each others cage, they are bonding fine. How old are they? If you got them from a pet store, and it was only 3 months agao, then they are probably only about 5-7 months old by now (on average, 'tiels from a pet store are about 2-4 months old when they are sent to the store to begin with, so, add the three months ago that you bought them and voila!) If this is about the correct age, then you still have about a whole 'nother year almost before you even WANT them to start breeding (females need to be between 18 months to 2 years old before they start laying). Also, once the breeding season starts, your male will start with a particular song (you'll know it's the right one because you will hear it over and over and over and over and over) and your hen will start doing what my husband calls the Funky Monkey (tail in the air, trying to get ANYTHING to pet her head, whether it's you, a toy, your male....) But, breding season is almost over for this year, so, next spring love will probably be in the air (and the cage, and the nest box, and on your sofa, and in the living room, etc, ad nauseum..)

BIRDS ARE LIKE PEOPLE THEY HAVE TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER. THEY PICK THERE MATE IN THE WILD. Time is what you need to give them.

sometimes, love takes time, especially if your a bird...patience...
Don't separate them, I'm sure they are bonded, even if they have not making babies..
