City and county governments provide fueling stations - often right there at the police garage for officer to obtain gas. Depending on the size of the department, the service may be provided by city garage personnel or the office may pump it him/herself. Or the fuel station may be at the city corporation yard, but the bottom line is that the officer and fire fighter does not pay out of their own pocket. And they cannot fuel their private cars or else that would be a serious matter of discipline, aka theft.
Very large police departments and highway patrols, where the jurisidictional expanse is wide and patrol cars are great distances away from the agency fueling stations, will often have arrangements/contracts with certain regular gas stations for fill-ups. The officer logs the information there for the car being serviced and the city pays the tab.

No police officers don't pay for thier own gas ( I have went on training out of town and had to and they paid it back)
But most police departments have thier own gas pumps, or they have an account at some gas station.
Same with fire departments, most cities have thier own gas pumps, if not they have an account at some local gas station

Sounds like a great editorial. As others have suggested, health care would be a great addition to this. These are the perks of power that *really* divide our legislators from the common man, not asinine parsing of words to try to paint someone as "elitist." As long as they don't have to feel the financial sting that the rest of us exist with on a daily basis, they are, collectively, out of touch. As for the chances of it happening: don't count on it anytime soon. Those in power almost never want to give up the benefits of that power. What we need is to encourage to run and to vote into office more "common man" candidates, or at the very least hold the current office-holders accountable. Competition is a good thing, especially politically -- if you have a Senator or Congressman who just seems to be getting fat off the money that comes with the job, your best recourse is to threaten him with a primary election battle. If more viable candidates run for a seat, lawmakers will either have to shape up or get shown the door.

Usually the town supplies the gas for all of the emergency vehicles. In most towns the town payes for all the gas which is usually at a town Building.
