I have had insomnia since i was 8. Here are the suggestions i have been given:
Keep the same bedtime and wake up time-even on weekends
Think about what things keep you awake-is it thinking? pick a time during the day to let yourself think and worry, and when its night time say "i can think about this at such and such time"
Exercise- when you exercise you end up with more energy during the day and are more likely to fall asleep-think about it, if you are more active during the day you will be bodily tired as well as mentally tired
Read, or take a hot bath, or any other relaxing thing before bedtime, so your brain is not in high gear when you lay down to sleep.
they say if you are still awake after 15 minutes to get up for a couple minutes but i find it is the opposite for me, that only gets me more restless. I go to sleep easier if i stay in the same position.
Count sheep, or breaths, breathe deeply
Don't watch tv shortly before bedtime-not sure why tho.
There are some that say exercising right before bed helps them but some say don't do it cause it will get your blood pumping, I say try what you think will help and if it doesn't work then try the other thing
Reserve the bed for sleep and sex, they say associating it with other things will only keep you up
there are some others if i think of them i will edit the post, but if these don't help and other suggestions from others, feel free to talk to your doctor they can give you more suggestions or insomnia medication.
Good luck to you!

I had the same problem several years ago. I did two things that cured my insomnia without medications. First, I bought a higher quality mattress and box springs. The extra padding and the individual springs that allowed my spouse to move without disturbing the entire bed proved to be HUGE factor in falling asleep. Nevermind the better back support a higher quality mattress provided. Second, I began exercising on an elliptical trainer (although any cardio trainer will suffice) thirty to forty-five minutes everyday. It was enough to fatigue my muscles and my mind.
I also found that worrying about things tended to keep me awake. Sometimes I just couldn't clear my mind of some problem at work or at home. A lot of it stemmed from not being able to forgive myself from some lapse perfect integrity, such as not telling my wife about spending money even though she is in charge of paying the bills. I found that just talking about those problems instead of keeping them bottled up inside eased my mind enough to fall asleep.
I hope this helps!

I am the same way. I have to exercise everyday. I am a high energy person and I HAVE TO HAVE TO exercise everyday so I can fall alseep at night.
I bike ride or even just turn the radio on and dance around the house and sing for half an hour. Anything that burns energy will help you relax

Stop over working. Reading in bed helps, relax, take a hot bath before bed time and enjoy.

warm milk
a hot shower
a massage
cut down on caffeine
do not do anything strenuous 90 minutes before bed
listen to classical music
deep breathing exercises
prayer and/or meditation
I've used all of these at one time or other. the other thing is to examine your life and see if there is some stress in it you aren't resolving.
pleasant dreams...

Stay up and watch the TV for a bit longer. If that doesn't work take a quick look at the light bulb, close your eyes and follow the residue of the light around - this usually works for me
