Don't Join up. It is a sad fact of life that many (not all) of the people in charge of letting you loose for such an important event view other families as inconvenient, expensive luggage. My husbands chief, on the approach of our first child, made the comment "Well, my dog is having puppies, and I don't get to go home for that". There were plenty of chanced for TAD orders, and my husband does not hold a mission critical rate. The people who could make it happen just didn't care.
Maybe you're lucky, maybe it's different for you. Request TAD orders near to home, request paternal leave (you get that after the baby comes... equal rights go both ways!) And if you just cannot make it for the birth, make sure your wife has some help... offer to fly out Grandparent. I was all alone for the birth of my first, all my friends had gone underway. It was a miserable time to be alone.
And to those of you slamming him, lighten up. I have never met a military man who truly loves his family who didn't have these feelings, and this is a nice place to vent some frustration, and maybe get a useful honest suggestion. Better than popping off and punching the authority figure who deserves it. Sign up yourselves, then see what these feelings are like. Anyone would want to be there for the birth of their child.

(1) Avoiding deployment while in service is not necessarily reprehensible, if it is done for the right reasons - i.e. to maintain family, to aid professional development, and the like. Not everyone is a coward. I know people who have done three deployments in 5 years and just need time off.
(2) "Cuba" and "Detainee Detail" make no sense. If you're talking about a Guantanamo assignment, that's an OCONUS posting so it does count as an overseas tour. As for "Detainee Detail" - what are you talking about?
(3) Pregnancies do not keep a servicemember from deploying. It is upto Commander's discretion on how long you stay back stateside, but bottom line is you deploy.
If you asked this question for the right reasons, my advice to you is to find a cadre slot somewhere or reclass. If you're just malinigering (and this is being very generous and allowing that you're actually in the service) then ask your Chain of Command to chapter you out, whether on compassionate grounds if you can convince them of that fiction, or as an adverse action, so you don't continue to waste taxpayer dollars.
Better yet, ask someone in the food chain if you're actually in the service. Better answers than you'd find in here on average anyways.

I assume you mean flee to Cuba, voluteer for Detainee Detail, or your wife is pregnant. Well, fleeing is breaking the law, if you are military. The military does not care if your wife is pregnant, however, if you were pregnant, you could get out of deployment. I know people who recently recovered from cancer, who were sent to the Mideast. If you volunteer for Detainee Detail or have another skillset, that is useful stateside, you might not be deployed. The other option that you did not mention is have friends in high places. That is one of the ways that my girlfriend has managed to stay in the US. Also, she is a trainer, and that helps her as well. Personally, I have mixed feelings about those who try to avoid deployment, because so many cannot. Especially those who have served our country and finished their tour, and get a tap on the shoulder 6, 7 or 8 years later to come back, and be deployed. If you want to avoid deployment, it is always better not to join the military.

Mr. Miyagi say....
Best way to avoid punch is not be there
(Karate Kid cheesy movie)
go to jail for missing movement or other charges like 1LT Watada from Ft. Lewis right now for protesting an unjust and illegal war of choice complete with war crimes committed by leaders in charge over operations where attrocities occured
best way to avoid...do like me. Don't re enlist again and find something that doesn't have the word soldier or military or mercenary in it, or peace corps etc
it's part of being a soldier, hard to whine when you signed on dotted line, it sucks but I put up with it for 15 years and got out when the military stopped being a defense and became a weapon for offence, invasion, occupation and attrocities and violations os UCMJ, US Constitution, Human Rights, International Law, Geneva Conventions, and so many other documents the US formerly abided by until GW decided to "clarify" them and say they didn't apply

thousands of military spouses have given birth while their husband's were deployed. Your wife is not the first, nor will she be the last. 12 months at GITMO is a helluva lot better than 12 months in the litterbox.
asking t o get out of it is a sure fire way to be labled a troublemaker at best and at worst, considered a shirker. it's an all volunteer military, and you can't tell me you haven't noticed what's been going on the last five years....

I'll trade you places! But, then, I would never be at risk of missing the birth of my child! Seriously, I wanted in and they turned me away.

Tell them your a p***y coward and you want to go home to mommy! I see thousands of real men and real women over here everyday, that would rather be somewhere else with someone they love getting someone pregnant or getting pregnant and they are not complaining to the world. They are doing their job.
SUPPORT THE TROOPS EVERYBODY - EXCEPT FOR THIS SECURITY GUARD WITH THE CORP. CRYING FOR ATTENTION!
