I recently converted my entire music archive (5500 songs) from WMA format to MP3 files. this has freed me to non-proprietary encoding formats. I have been a long time Windows media player user and am looking for a good alternative. I have looked into iTunes and like the features such as native burning support where audio, MP3 CD, and data CD are offered. I dislike the Apple store and other related commercialization. I often use MP3 CD's in two cars and would like a similar experience. I am intending on using MP3 format only to avoid migrating my media twice. Free would be nice! what would you suggest?

I really would go with iTunes.
Reasons are that

1. It supports mp3s
2. Can copy cds straight to Mp3s or AAC or WMA
3. Can burn cds to either mp3, aac or cda (normal cds)
4. You can turn off the itunes store and don't need to have anything to do with it.
5. It's Free
6. ITunes 7 allows you to download highres album covers automatically and shows them in a fantastic way.
7. It's library is so much more intuitive and easy to use that WiMP or WinAmp
8. It can keep all your mp3s nicely organised, if you wish. and you don't have to convert tracks.
9. It allows you to make "smart playlists" which allow you to keep your listening "fresh"
10. you can burn any playlist to CD at a click of a button

iTunes really is the one. Remember you can switch off the iTune store and the ministore. It is worth creating an account jsut to get the highres album covers!

I would suggest iTunes ,but since you already reject that I don't know what to suggest because next to iTunes the others are woefully inferior or to use the expression they suck. I have tried several and if you think iTunes is commerrical wait til you try Napster.Rhapsody, RealPlayer,Music Match and on and on....good luck. I just now saw Nads answer and agree completely with him.
