Acid rain primarily results from pollutants (that are usually formed as the result of combustion) such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) dissolving in the water in the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3).

The term "acid rain" is commonly used to mean the deposition of acidic components in rain, snow, fog, dew, or dry particles. The more accurate term is "acid precipitation." Distilled water, which contains no carbon dioxide, has a neutral pH of 7. Liquids with a pH less than 7 are acid, and those with a pH greater than 7 are alkaline (or basic). "Clean" or unpolluted rain has a slightly acidic pH of 5.6, because carbon dioxide and water in the air react together to form carbonic acid,
The extra acidity in rain comes from the reaction of air pollutants, primarily sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, with water in the air to form strong acids (like sulfuric and nitric acid). The main sources of these pollutants are vehicles and industrial and power-generating plants.

Rain is weak carbonic acid - when it falls it picks up pollutants from the atmosphere.
That's why we get fossils in limestone - the weak acid rain dissolves the calcium carbonate remains of plant and animal life trapped in the rock, leaving only it's form as a fossil.

Acid rain is caused by sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere (from natural and industrial sources) dissolving into the water and forming sulphuric acid. Hence the rain is acidic and is termed acid rain.

Acid rain is rain that is at first normal, but as it falls it gets caught in the pollution that is in the air its falling in2, mainly cities like NY r Cali have probes like this b/c of all the cars, trucks and factories there that give off the smoke that goes in2 the air that makes it polluted. and that is how acid rain develops.

It is rain with a higher acid Ph level than normal due it picking up pollutants from the atmosphere when its in vapour form

Well because of all pollution to the earth and ozone pollution turns into dirt and crap stuff turns into acid. so when it rains it contains acid.but not all rain has acid

is when rain traps CO2 and SO2 (carbon and sulphur dioxide) on its decent and falls to ground this is corrosive and rots statues and things
