Zales is okay, but you can get much better diamonds and settings much cheaper in the UK if you know someone or you can make a trip there.
I prefer white gold to platinum; however, depending on the quality of the white gold, you will have to get the ring re-dipped every 6 mos to a year to keep it shiny and white. This cost $30 to $40 each time.
Platinum bands look like white gold at first, but they eventually get a patina that looks a little grayish.
It really depends on what you prefer; I have yellow gold, but that is because I think the yellow makes my diamond look so much warmer. There seems to be much more color when you pair yellow gold with colorless diamonds.
As far as shape is concerned, princess cuts seem popular right now. The problem with princess cuts is that you have to be careful of picking the right stone because "inclusions" (carbon marks that are visible to the naked eye) are easier to see and very unattractive in a clear, colorless diamond. I prefer cushion or Asher cuts, though (they are a bit more expensive.)

Zales has been in the diamond business for 80+ years. All of our wedding jewelry came from there. We looked at private stores and everywhere else. We just had my ring appraised and it appraised for 6000 more than he paid for it. Princess cut is beautiful. I am an emerald cut girl myself. I have white gold... but we are having them set in platinum later. Platinum is very expensive though. Sometimes they turn back to yellow. It just depends on the person and their skin type. I found this out the hard way. The people at Zales will help you in any way possible. If you have any questions, they will be glad to help. Good luck.

Zales is OK to go with. As far as white gold or platinum, I prefer platinum, but it is very expensive.
Why don't you pick out about five or six rings in your price range and have the woman go in and choose from among them? That way she will get what she wants and you will be sure she likes it.
I did not care for my engagement ring, but that was OK. The thing is I know (I found out) that he really did not put any thought into it. If someone picked out the right ring just for me, I would be happy with it no matter what.

I'd go with white gold personally, only because I've always thought that engagement/wedding rings should be gold.
I love princess cut stones, but I don't know if it is 'in'.
If you are so concerned about style, you should buy a fake ring, then you can change it when the fashion changes :)

The price difference between White Gold and Platinum is very miniscule...so I think its preference. Platinum is stronger but dulls after a while. I prefer to go to a private jeweler, maybe someone you are close to can reccomend a good one? You really have to make sure that you do your homework on the 3 C's about diamonds, cut, clarity & color. They really make a difference in how the stone looks, especially years to come. Also, princess cut is a great cut, you really get more bang for your buck due to how easy it is to cut the stone. So compared to a round cut its less. Go to a few website, www.Diamondsareforever.com, www.bilenile.com and do a little price comparision....these are great websites for diamonds! Good luck!!!

I've heard that platinum can lose diamonds easier. I honestly don't think it matters either way..I wouldn't waste the money on platinum.
Be careful when buying a ring at Zales-their clarity is not good at all. They do have some diamonds where you don't notice anything, but make sure you look VERY VERY closely-I've never seen a diamond there that wasn't I1 or worse-meaning that inclusions are visible to the naked eye.

I am not an expert, but I have purchased one engagement ring.
In general, Zales is a low-end store. Sorry, does that sound snooty? You don't say where you live but I would certainly look around at other places. I can give you the name and address of a good jeweler in Chicago.
Believe me, I know that price can be an issue, regardless how much you love your girlfriend.
Maybe you can ask friends or family to recommend a jeweler.

Well that would depend on the wuality of diamond that you are looing for...clarity, color, cut, size, etc. If you are looking for a cheaper lower end diamond they are fine. But if you are looking for a higher quality diamond I would not go to them at all. Do not be foled by what they tell you. Research the diamonds and go in educated about the color, clarity and have an understanding so you know what you are getting and are not wasting your money.
The gold is a personal thing. As far as cut what does your girl like. I have the round cut, and hated the square one, but it depends on what she and you like.

If you really love your fiance and want the best for her, you'll get the platinum. Its much more precious, harder, resistant to oxidation than white gold. The engagement ring represents your love and dedication to her - would you prefer to get a ring that lasts longer or shorter? Get the platinum. Her girlfriends will be impressed and it will make her feel even better.
