If you want to have more torque you need to raise compression. If you are willing to do the work go to 85 and up swirl port heads. They have heart shaped combustion chambers that are 59 cc. Open up the exhaust and and intake to 360 size. use 202 valves. The main thing is to get these heads to breath. I'll leave cam up to you. As for intake you will need a Edelbrock Air gap 2 plain. You will also need full headers. 350 two 400hp depending on cam. P.S Take 0.050 off of the chamber side that will give you 52cc and use flat valves. A shade under 10.1 compression. Don't try using 360 or 340 heads the compression will fall from a already low 8.1 to somewhere around 7.1. Killing performance even more. If unable to do this work' Just bolt on the 85 and up heads with the air gap intake. You should have about 25 to 50 more hp.

a good flowing filter assembly is crucial, like a k&n. a dual plane intake manifold would be best to maintain low-midrange torque. using headers instead of the stock cast iron manifolds will free up some extra ponies but will require a new system from the header back. lower backpressure in the exhaust system will yield more power any way you look at it. remember, an engine is basically a big, expensive air pump, so anything that would help it breath better would be the easiest power you're gonna make.

there once was a book on Dodge performance. It advised that you dont want to go far from the orginal specs of the dogde becuase they had the best tunned engines. But to get more toque, goto the junk yard and get a 360 engine. Take the heads and the intake off and bolt them to your 318, the ports on the 360 heads are larger, and you'll get more torque out of the engine.

You could put a boatload of cash into your 318 to get where you want to be I think - You should consider a crate motor as an alternative - MP has a 360 crate motor that has 320HP and is really not much more expensive than an engine rebuild at a good performance shop.

If you are going to haul anything, look at the rear gears. Too tall a gear and torque will decrease. Put 4.11 or higher and you will snap your neck off when you launch it. Torque monster then....
Let the engine 'breathe' too...

Cold air intake. Cheap, easy to install, adds about 10-15 hp.

i don't be attentive to why you are able to need to mod such an old, intense mileage vehicle.. overall performance mods are not quite "affordable" although. yet issues like aftermarket exhaust/muffler, air intake, headers, rapid/great charger, throw some rims on it and so on.
