Is this the going rate or is he just getting rich quick?

If you leave your cat it may just get worse. Then it will be in REAL pain. And then it will be even more expensive. It also depends on if the cats on its last legs or not.

Very few veterinarians are "rich" considering the amount of time and money that has gone into their education and training.

That being said, tooth infections are serious matters and I am sure the teeth must come out for the sake of your cat's health. Some veterinarian's do charge more for procedures than others. You can shop around and may spend more money by trying out various and sundry vets.

At the clinic where I take my cats they charge $65 for a cleaning and $100 for the anesthesia. My vets will just pull a tooth while they are doing a cleaning if the tooth needs to come out. It is not quite as simple as the old string on the door knob procedure for baby teeth that will fall out anyway. And if the teeth are inflected the vets has to treat with anitbiotics, maybe some pain medication, etc.

If you have ever had an infected tooth yourself you know how painful it can be. Your cat is not a "bloody" cat because he needs relief from his pain.

With the price of vet treatment, now you know why it pays to insure your animal. I used to use Petplan, but have found "Mark and sparks" do the same insurance for a fraction of the price, if you have a "marks & Spencer" card, phone them and ask to give you a quote. It won't help with the vet bill this time, but any more treatment and you're quids in. PS, bad teeth can cause nasty abcesses, anti-biotics might not be enough, so the vet is doing you and the cat a favour in the long run by taking the teeth out too. Tis an expensive business though.

Well, the price will vary depending on where you live and the class of the hospital. I can tell you that if your cat has a tooth abscess that is causing his face to swell, he needs treatment asap! It is very painful and the infection can spread to other areas of the body causing even bigger problems. He should also have his teeth cleaned while he is getting those nasty ones pulled out. There are probably other teeth in there that are pretty rotten as well. Here, in Texas where we are usually cheaper than other places, I can say it would probably cost you anywhere from $150 to $250 depending on the severity of the infection, how many teeth need to be extracted, type of antibiotics they choose, what kind of anesthetic they use, etc. You can go for a second opinion somewhere else, but don't be shocked if the estimate is about the same. This is your pet. He depends on you to take care of him and he is in pain, so don't make him suffer.

That is about the right price for a procedure like that. I know someone who spend $300 a year just to have her dogs teeth cleaned. And no you can't just tie a string to it like it was your childs tooth it is an abscess not a loose baby tooth. Sorry that is the way it is. If you don't get it pulled it could cause an infection worse than what is there now and cost more in the long run or your cat could die.

If you are in a town I think you will find that the quotation you have is about right.
You should think about finding a farm animal vet, who will not have such plush surgery facilities, but who might see to your cat for a bit less.
There is of course always the PDSA, who I am sure wouldn't turn you away.

It is worth asking why your cat's teeth are abscessed - and is it the teeth, or is it the cheek that is swollen due to a bite or scratch from another cat (a very common source of cat abscesses).

If it is the teeth themselves, you should look to your cat's diet, give him plenty of Cat biscuts, which are good for cleaning teeth, so you won't have this problem in the future.

I am sure that your comment about the string and door was humour to get over the shock of the quotation! you obviously care about your cat to have bothered taking it to the vet in the first place.

Good Luck, and I hope the cat is feeling better - they do have remarkable powers of recovery.

Medical procedures are expensive. If the cat's abscess isn't taken care of he will die a miserable death of infection. You can't remove teeth from a cat by yourself and if you try you're comitting cruelty to animals. Of course the vet's not joking. Converting pounds to dollars, that's roughly what you'd pay for something like that here in the States.

If you're not willing to pay for his vet care, you should find him a home with someone who is.

Get this problem taken care of, or your cat is going to suffer miserably. Abscesses are terribly painful. I know - I've had one myself. I don't think you really want that for your pet.

My dog has a loose tooth and the vet quoted me about $600 US, which is about 300 quid. It's no joke. To get the teeth removed, the cat needs anaesthesia, pain meds, and maybe even a catheter.

I'm afraid not.

The bill will include the cost of anaesthetic, antibiotics and any other drugs your cat may need (all very expensive), disposables, surgical instruments, running costs of the surgery, the nurses wages and the vets time.

Veterinary surgery is a highly specialised profession. A vet is hardly going to charge peanuts for their service.

It might be worth your while looking into insurance for your cat.

Sorry.
